Steve,
This is interesting timing - We are working at the moment on Members
Blogs which will effectively be a place where you can publish your journals and upload photos of your trips. This has been on the drawing board for a while now and will be released shortly. This will fall under your
membership and as such will not cost you any additional fee. So this may be the answer to your question.
I know that a lot of you will want to start using this system ASAP however I must finish the development and have it fully tested prior to release so the exact dates are not yet know however it will be in the next few months. Keep you eyes on the newsletters as we get closer to the release.

Steve,
Same thing as you would have to do to publish - take the RAW image to JPG and then upload - When the images are uploaded we will reduce the size down during the upload (reduce the quality - reduce the size). The reduced quality and size images will be stored on the server to be output in your
blogs.
Using products like Picasa make this conversion simple and it also makes the resize really easy - we will have instructions based on Picasa for the image upload function.
If you publish your own pages you would have to manage the convert from RAW and resize in almost the same way. We will just make the publishing part really simple as you will not have to worry about HTML code or have an editor just enter the text and upload the images and it should just work.
I want to integrate OziExplorer plots and waypoints into the Blog system so that you can have maps for your trips and other stuff also. I just need to finish it so you can play and provide the feedback. It should be really great I just need a week or two (full time) to finish it.

Another really simple image resizing utility is.....Image Resizer for xp. Yes a freebie ms product, but it is brilliant. It wont convert from raw to jpg but it will resize any jpg to any size you want.

Great work David
Any idea what space allocation per
membership will be at this stage?
Keep up the great work.

Noel,
Space allocation is one of those items I have to work out. With over 1250 current members it could mean a lot of space & bandwidth. I expect to resize images to around 50KB each, I do not expect every member will use it (unknown percentage at this stage), The database model will be as efficient as possible. Even 1MB each is 1.2GB - this is not enough space per user however I believe I will allocate a slab of the server disk (for images) and db space (for text) and see how it runs for a while to determine the best allocation. So I guess if you read into my answer there will be no real limits applied in the first release and we will see how it is used across the board. It may be a case of if someone wants/uses a heap of space then they may be required to pay a little more (maybe use cash, member money or contribute a trek note or article etc) - again all this is speculation, however like most items on ExplorOz (Trader & Pointplace) we give away a certain amount and then if you want to use it more then we get you to subsidise your usage (either financial or via provision of content).
I must get to work now so that I can have a chance of looking at completing this feature.

Ok David - thanks for the detailed response. I know what it's like as far as allocating space goes, being a network admin myself.
Good luck with the project.

During 2001 my family travelled for 4 months across and around this great land. I did a website so that I could keep family and friends informed. It was a great success. I found that my friends and rellies were waiting for each of the updates. Even people that I did not know contacted me to get me to send them an email advisinf of each update. I upadted my laptop every few days from trip notes kept by my wife and then when I had mobile phone access I uploaded to the server. I only had a very cheap 640 * 480 digital camera then but the photos are not too bad.
The page is still on the web but I have not updated it. Waiting for my next big trip. Oh
well can still dream I suppose.

My advise is go for it

Well done David..I have no idea how you guys get so much technical work done and still see some of the great outdoors*..I am sure interested in your proposed site addition for my 4x4 specific photos, trips, bloggs etc..For several years I have paid touse Fotki www.fotki.com for my pix and there is provision for other activities like bloggs etc.Cost is minimal (they have great specials sometimes) As I and others wind up posting thousands of pix here,I don't feel it is correct for me to load your great site (I am a paying member and will continue to use your top service) with non 4x4 adventure/nature pix so I imagine, when your site is up and running with these special features,I will post only my adventure 4x4 pix and bloggs of specific interest to your, firstly,"$upporting" members and then for other welcome visitors.*Maybe you sit out under a big Coolibah, with an esky, with a line in the river, lappie sitting where the title implies, typing out all the wonderful things you do to maintain the site. Maybe! Have fun..RockyOne!MPG:6!

Hi Steve,
Not sure when you are leaving on your trip, but if the Explor Oz blog is not up and running, I have been using one for the past 2 months on our trip. We have a month left. If you want to check it out www.traveleor.com/pagesaussieadventure we have found it really good to keep our friends up to date. Hope this helps.

G'day Steve
My website with domain name and all is quite large with around 150 pages in it.
My set-up and later upload costs came to about $3000 as I had other people do the work and still do. Hosting costs per year are around the $200
Best thing is to look at David's suggestion. It definitely looks like a good one.
Cheers

I purchased a domain from the US and pointed it to
my home page on my ISP. Works for me anyway. ISP gives me 60 megs for
home page, domain cost me about $30.00 for two years and pointing costs nothing.
