Hi all,
Was wondering if any 2.8 gu owners out there could tell me if there car has oil consumption issues, Having picked up mine on monday doing 400km since and I checked the oil and it took around 700mls of oil. It was serviced by the dealer prior to sale so maybe the oil was under filled or it uses oil. It has 114,000 km on the clock. It does not blow smoke only a puff of black when you boot it in the guts. Any thoughts would be great.

thanks Stefan

Gday Stefan

Mine uses around a litre or so between changes (5000 km), usually running on decent trips and warm to hot ambient temperatures. I haven't had totop it up yet (done 135,000, owned since 75,000, had a rebuild due to a substantial overheat at 125,000). If yours was used for short trips etc, it may have had a bit of fuel dilution (so I have read) of the oil. If your 400 km was had a decent trip with the oil pretty hot it may have burned the fuel off.

If it was purchased off a dealer it should have a warrenty of some form if the excessive use continues. The dealer may have used crap oil as well, which will burn off easier.

Welcome to the over 2200 rpm club, Andrew

Thanks Andrew,
Being my first oil burner I have no idea about diesels. This fuel dilution is it a bad thing? Yes the 400km was all around town work. Yes it has warrenty so I am watching the car like a hawk to get maximum $$$ worth out of the 3 mth warrenty.

I think the Oil dilution by fuel is a bad thing, but only really effects cars that do a lot of short trips and rarely get up to full operating temperature. The poor little 2.8 has copped a fair (unfair) ammount of criticism over the years. IMO, it does the job quite well, although If I mooved back to the east coast where there are hills etc I might change my tune. Although I would much rather the 4.2, I don't know if I would like the 3.0.

Mine had no trouble towing a 2 tonne ski boat around, and now only has about a tonne or so to deal with my centre console, which it does with ease. Only problems I'd check on, and there are a couple of others that rectified this on this site, is trouble starting when hot. mine does it occasionally, and aparently there is a spacer of some sort that goes in the injector pump. Mine does it occasionally, but it has almost disappeared since fitting a dual battery system. (a lot more avail CCA most of the time).

Aparently fitting an electric lift pump helps with this, and helps prolong the life of the injection pump as well. I don't know how accurate this is, but I bought 1 anyway and will be fitting it along with a CAV type filter this week. Aparently the additional lift pump is important if you fit and extra filter.

Good luck with the vehicle.

Cheers Andrew

Well I took the only logical choice did a change with MY choice of oil and quality filter made sure it was filled to correct level, and now I guess I watch. I agree with your thoughts on the 2.8...I could not afford a 4.2, I could have streched to an early 3.0 but was a bit scared to do that with all the stories around about them. Then this LOW km gem came up at the right price it seemed like the way to go, It keeps up with the traffic, will sit on 100 nicely, what more do you need. And my thoughts were that it has been around for a while so many of the bugs would gotten rid of. With the hot start I guess I will never know as it alredy has duel batt's installed by previous owner, starts hot or cold like a gem. My only problem is getting used to pushing a manual through the bush as my last 4by was an auto 4.2 duel fuel GQ. I know what you mean about the over 2200 rpm club!!!! LOL

They probably just under filled it.

Monitor the oil level over the next few 1000 K’s to be sure.

I have 150,000k on my 4By and it uses no oil between changers of 10,000K and I wouldn’t expect it to ether.

I doubt Oil/ fuel dilution would be the problem if the thing has just been serviced.

You may want to check for leaks around the motor.

700mils in 400K is a substantial amount for it to be using.

Cheers.

i would change the oil with good oil and filters, (then you know where it is at)
all engines will use some oil -- 500ml @ 5000km or so.
in most cases you would not notice smoke from the rear, but look on the tailgate for soot marks.
all the best

Ours is 1998 - 182 000 km
Never had to add oil between 5 000 changes - appears to use almost nil

As most of the above, ours has 250000 on it and doesn't use any between changes.
Change your oil, that way you know when it was done and also exactly what's in it, god only knows what the previous owner put in it or when he last did it, same goes for your fuel and air filter, also check your diff and gearbox oil to at least make sure there is some in there (don't laugh, I've seen it happen ) and also to make sure it's not contaminated with water.
My only other piece of advice is to put a Motson's power-up module on it, you'll never look back!

Same as all the others.
Mines got 175,000km on it and does not use any oil between changes. If it has been in the city for a few kilometers it does give off a puff of black smoke at startup but this is greatly reduced after a good hard run in the country. Also I wait around six seconds after the glow-plug light has gone out before cranking and it fires first time everytime otherwise you have to crank it forwhile before it kicks and blows a bloody great cloud (usually reserve this 'feature' for when the greenies have set up a stall outside the local woolies!). I only wait the six seconds at startup on cold starts, when its warm I dont even bother with the glow plugs and it starts instantly. Whilst on the run it does not blow any smoke at all except when you do boot it really hard in the guts. I change the oil (engine and gearbox) and filters (fuel and oil) every 5000km, diffs every 20 and the radiator is flushed every 25. I do this religiously, even though it means a few extra bucks, but I think it is worth the peace of mind.

Happy motoring
