Following on from Posts 36573 & 36662 where I mentioned that the CD Tuner in my Prado120 has gone kaput. I haven't been able to find a good replacement double DIN unit (especially one with a 6 CD-stacker like the Prado unit, or with DVD audio playback capability) & started looking at the single DIN units. I like the idea of ones with DVD audio playback capability because of the number of MP3's I could get on one DVD. I don't use an Ipod so not interested in buying one just so I can play it through the CD-tuner unit (although I can understand why you would go that direction if you already owned an Ipod)
At the moment I'm thinking of the Alpine DVA-9861E which you can get for around $599-$699 (JB-HiFi have just started stocking Alpine by the way). I'm told that Alpine are a pretty good brand. So does anyone have any opinion on Alpine gear, especially their durability for use on long corrugated roads?. Also, has anyone used a DVA-9861E in particular??

As stated previously the Sony MEX R1 has what you require for 1/2 the price...

Yes the Sony MEX R1 is still an option however pretty
well every dealer i spoke to (even dealers that stocked Sony) said the quality of Sony units was not anywhere near that of some other brands like Clarion, JVC, Alpine. Consistent message was that Sony has a higher than normal return rate and their warranty service wasn't crash hot
