Found out something interesting today. Poor old truck started running like a hairy goat yesterday whilst out the bush, no power, couldn't hear the turbo spinning, all up I thought she was for the scrap heap. Thought I'd have to put her down there and then.
Anyhow drove back to town and had the diagnostics run over it and they said ECM2 code. Now that's pretty general apparently so the
young fella gave me a print out with all the Earth wires that I should check if I wanted to save some money.
So after a crook back and crawling under, over and around it for an hour, I decided to take off the plastic cowling over the intercooler and I found the problem.
There is a small vacuum resevior that sits on the top of the tappet cover in line with the intake pipe of the intercooler. Two hoses come out of it. Anyhow one of the plastic pipes coming out of the reservoir was snapped off, losing all the vacuum I suppose. Anyhow ordered another one for $65.00 and did a quick repair on the old one. She's back! I can still say 180,000 and going strong.

You are not alone. We had the same problem with my mates truck on a trip to
Cape York just a couple of weeks ago. I have passed you post on to him so he won't feel alone either.

This vacuum reservoir controls the variable vane turbo (i.e no vacuum - no go).
How do I know - when Nissan replaced my turbo someone snapped of the top of the reservoir, and rather than replace it, the same person jammed a nail in the tube and tried to stick it back on the reservoir (completely blocking the tube).
Many weeks of frustration with an under-powered Patrol and many trips to Nissan.
My local mechanic found finally found it (and I’ve been a customer ever since).
Interesting to note that this reservoir doesn't exist on the Series III (another small redesign between models).

Much as I hate to admit it, but it was a bit unnerving. I hope there are no toyota drivers out there today, but I did thing
well the poor old girls finally thrown up her guts??
Then I'd have to eat crow after I went out and bought a Hilux or something, perish the thought?

Know how you feel.
After a fuel pump, turbo and gearbox in my Series II, I wasn't waiting for anything else to happen once out of warranty.
Now happy with a TD6 in the driveway!

Notso, im not sure if your having a crack @ the
young fella or not but yes the broken vac pipe will create a prob but i think you will find it in no way caused ECM2 code, and it is not a general problem but when it does happen the info i kindly passed onto you is the fix.( dont tell nissan ) Some of us dealer blokes arent all bad blokes. Just trying to help when we can. The

young fella has given me the best service of all the Nissan dealers I have visitted all over Aus.
The ECM2 code was the usual problem that occurs when there is a poor earth. The last time it happened, "the
young fella" got his apprentice to clean up every earth point on the truck and it didn't happen again for 18months. By the way he did it for nothing.
This time he offered me diagrams and said it would save me a few bob if I cleaned the earth arees myself.
Anyhow after doing all the earth points it was still "Running like a hairy goat" so I investigated further and found the broken pipe.
"the
young fella" had no reason to check anything else as I only asked him to diagnose it.
So, now knowing what your background is, I will cancel the vacuum
tank and save $65.00.
