The bride and I have just completed a fantastic guided four week 4wd trip from
Darwin to
Perth via the
Canning Stock Route. This was our first excursion outside the "Australian metro hotspots" and we have both been bitten by the bug to travel further afield.
We would love to be able to take a year out, purchase our own 4wd vehicle and caravan and travel around and through Australia using proven
camp grounds. However we have a business in NZ that requires our hands on attention for at least nine months of the year.
Our journey through the CSR was made easier as a result of advice gained through this
forum, and we again seek your wise council as to how we can best see more of Australia bearing in mind the constraints outlined above.
The sixty four dollar question is this:
"How does an early 50's couple living in NZ with 6 - 12 weeks annual leave achieve their goal of travelling around Australia, and how do they best do it?"
Q. Can such a trip be planned and completed (say) "State by State", or similar over a period of years, what suggestions do you have?
Q. What is the best means of travel and accommodation, eg purchase a 4wd and caravan (but what do we do with it in our absence), or hire same?
We hope you can understand our dilemma and be able to provide some positive feedback and advice, and maybe some of you have also faced and overcome this situation.
We would be grateful for your thoughts.

A trayback ute with slip on camper or a Station wagon & camper trailer are generally the best two alternatives that give a reasonable amount of comfort on a long trip yet don't restrict where you can go. A caravan for example can't be taken into
places like the Bungles.
For long terms, hire would be pretty expensive but if you do buy feel free to leave the rig at my place when you go home ;-) Transport in a shipping container surely wouldn't be as dear as storage rates or hire??????
Cheers Craig.........

We have members doing just what you describe.
Try asking your question here, www.bushtrackerownersgroup.asn.au
If they are reading the site and not in a remote area you may get some ideas there.

We are trying to do the same thing, but from
Brisbane.
Take 4 to 6 weeks off every 2 years and see areas of Oz.
We still need to work to put bread on the table each week however.
It can take a week for us however to get from east to west, plus the fuel bill :-)
We have done a corner of a state each time, and always feel that most are a flying visits. Plenty of
places we would like to get back too. Started in 1990 with our first pajero.
Michelle has some good links above to other areas of this web site that will help.
Found the best is to plan as best you can, do the trip carefully, and you will learn as you go. If you are willing to learn, you will learn quickly.
