The guy across the road from me works for a car rental company, anyway he sometimes brings home a 3 ltr TD Patrol ST (2004) model. On Sunday it was in his driveway with the bonnet up and he was on the phone. I went over and asked him what was wrong.
"No pwer" he said "on the phone to the NRMA"
I said " more than likely the MAF sensor"
NRMA turns up and confirms the MAF sensor.
So I have a bit of a look under the bonnet and was horrified at what I saw.
Air cleaner totally blocked with brown dust/crud.
Pulled the dipstick....AAAHHHH! wheres the oil?!!!
Radiator pressure
tank was nearly empty and NO coolant in the overflow
tank.
I closed the bonnet and left him to it......
He said he'd let his boss Know it needs a service......................................
and then they wonder why things go pearshaped.

Chris,
Totaly agree with you, this is a case of neglect on the rental company.
The thing is, these engines (as are all engines) are very reliant on the oil level, and clean air for the MAF sensor to work properly, and the cooling system..........,
well you know the how it goes.
Perhaps the topic subject should have been " servicing neglect could cause early death?"
It's just that I like to make sure everythings as it should be with my 3 Ltr and to see the state this was in made me cringe.

I've picked up a few hire 4x4s (of all flavours) in my time and the worst were invariably the ones that had come back from long term leases to mines, govt etc. The hire company would clean them up, but not do a service until it was 'due' (whatever that means).
