Winch Mounting Questions

Folks,

It looks like I will finally be getting my new bull bar this week, so the winch will be going back on the cruiser finally. It'll also give me an excuse to mount the rear winch at the same time.....

I just have a few questions.

Is there any reason I can't mount the winch switches on the dash? I am thinking of using the toggle switches from the 2 remote units, and having a hole for a remote to plug into just below the switch, in case I ever need to use it. I will obviously also have a kill switch for each winch somewhere seperate, so they don't operate accidently, but I am looking for reasons I would not want to do this.

For the rear mounted winch, I have asked this before, but has anyone mounted a winch to the rear of a 100 Series Landcruiser? The spare tyre has been removed, and I have the standard rear bumber on, and there looks to be more than enough space for it to fit. My idea is to basically cover up the area where the tyre was, and either get a small fuel tank made up for the front three quarters, or just use it for storage. The rear quarter would hold the winch, an air compressor, and possibly a small air tank. Be easier if I could see someone elses setup though....

Does anyone know what standards Bull Bars have to adhere to? The mob I am dealing with have apparently made a brand new one to match my old one, but I want to have a bit of ammunition in case they decide to stuff me around any more. The piece of bleep bar they gave us initially has moved about 2 inches to the left just through normal driving. I told them a bull bar needs more than 2 bolts to hold it on..... and they really should be hi-tensile bolts....lol....

Oh, and I am still halfway through the car PC install - i'll post a link this weekend for anyone thats interested.

Cheers,

Chris

rear mounted witch ... clearly you have been bewitched.

Anyways, two winches is two many toys chump-boy!

Where are you planning to put the winch fairlead?

Now I can see why I should have kept that lump of steel mount you shipped with your winches.

Ciao for now
Andrew.

lol - it's just one of those things I've wanted to do for a while....

The rollers will fit above the tow bar, and I will need to cut a hole in the centre of the rear bumper. I'll then probably mount one of those bars directly to the tow bar supports, and bolt the rollers straight on. The winch will sit back a little way, and be bolted directly to the chasis on both sides, and the tow bar at the very rear.

Thats the plan anyway - I still need to pop down to the engineering shop down the road, and bounce a few ideas around.

Too many toys? nah - never happen... besides, a lot of our travelling is solo, so I'd prefer to have a couple of winches, than a single winch, and a snatch strap. Not much I couldn't get myself out of this way.

And I've got all these winches and spares sitting here, waiting for failures.....lol.. I have got to do something with them! As all the warranties start to run out, my stock can decrease somewhat.....

How long have you had yours now? I've basically wrapped up the business now, and only keeping it going until all the warranties run out.

Cheers,

Chris

Hi Chris

No reason you can't hook into the plug wires and run a couple toggle switches to run them. I would have the winch isolated and the toggles switches isolated, so some one like bonz doesn't hope in your 4wd and just start flicking switches hahaha.

Love to see where you are mounting the rear one and might have to steal the idea. Just about to get a rear dual wheel carrier and pulled the spare out from under.

As for the bull bar, there at least 6 bolts on each chassis rail, 2 underneath, 2 on top and 2 on the outside part of the rail. If you need a photo, let me know and i will email one to you.

Crazie - no - the one I have on now has 2 bolts - one on each rail... It's a fairly well know brand as well.

Seemed a bit odd, and the damn thing as all skewed to one side now, just through normal driving.

Anyway, I'll be letting them know what I think of their crap when I see them. I might take a few photos, and warn a few people AFTER my new one is installed. The shop is a "specialist 4WD" place as well....

Cheers,

Chris

I have one sitting there, so i figure why not install it. It may yet go into the too hard or too expensive basket, but i'd rather give it a try first. The space is there, the winch is there, and not many people have done it before. Seems enough reason for me.

Besides, I may want to make the cruiser a little longer and narrower one day....lol....

Cheers

It's funny you say that - my cousin is just in the process of selling his Patrol (with a winch), and rang yesterday afternoon wondering where he would get another one from....

hmmmmm.....

Oh well - the original question still stands, the one about switches on the dash.

Cheers,

Chris
