I hoping to hear from anyone who can offer advise or recomendations for a suitable tow bar mounted bike rack for a landcruiser.
I need to carry 1 adults bike & 2 kids bikes.
And I do not have a rear mounted spare.
How do things work - ie. - when I want to get into the back of the cruser to get a "cold one", do I need to remove the whole bloody thing or they somehow swing out of the way?
Any advise is apreciated!
Cheers
Greg

It depends on where you want to take it.
For around town and on the bitumen, I have an extension off the hitch receiver with a standard bike rack.
Of course accessing the fridge is via the passenger seats ;-)
For the
Simpson Desert Cycle Challenge, the bike goes inside or on the roof-racks. For sure the bike or bike rack or bother would not survive the
Rig Road.
Ciao for now
Andrew.

Hey there,
I had similar difficulties and found that THULE do a fold down style bike carrier that can give some access to rear of 100 series, I think it is probably better for sedans etc. and getting into the boot though. Took some lifting with four adult bikes but should be OK for one adult and two kids. Simply fits onto factory tow bar.
After fitting an ARB bar with spare wheel on the back didn't have enough length to fit carrier onto tow ball, even with reece extension plate. (some bike shops have these). Now I use a FIAMMA Carry Bike set-up that has a bracket under the spare with the rack mounting on top. This allows the bikes to 'swing away' with the wheel and I can get in the back no prob. It is a two bike design but you can get an extension for the third bike.

Do a search on this site (exploreoz.com) not the
forum, but the site. They have an article with a link to a company in Bayswater Vic. that make a huge range of bike racks for 4wd's. Some of them fold down so you can access you're tailgate, some that go straight into your hitch receiver, some that you can tow with etc etc etc.
They also make models specifically for offroad use as
well.
They are freighting one over for me to W-ait A-while
Perth for only $35 bucks plus $160 for the rack. Less than $200 is pretty good I reckon.
I've just gone for the non-folding hitch reciver type that can take 4 bikes. It's got the extended hitch so that it will fit past my spare tyre and I can still access the gear in the back by winding the tailgate window down on the surf and going in behind the bikes.
There website is a little crappy, but they were very helpful.

Just to your left is a "site search" text box, you just type
"Bike Rack" in there.
But here is the link to their site advert anyway:

thanks.....didn't recognise their name. I was expecting a specialist dealer in
bike carriers only for some reason :-)

Hi Greg, I have the Hayman Reese STBC3T-Z. It carries our 4 bikes, but you can get a three bike version. It allows you to tow at the same time as carry the bikes, and tilts down if neded for access to the boot area - though it is pretty heavy. If you are looking at offroad driving with the bikes on the back, this is the strongest, most solid one I could find. We have had it for a few years now, and no problems!
Got it from the local bike
shop!
