My wife and two kids are going to travel next year around Australia, but we also want to do NZ as well. Does any one have any thoughts or input on shipping our 4wd across the Tasman and back? And what sort of money is involved?

Craig - I looked into this some time ago regarding shipping my Nissan Patrol from Melbourne to Auckland and return. The costs were quite high (from memory some $1400) plus loss of vehicle for 3 days prior to shipping at each port of departure plus numerous papers to be completed regarding customs. I got the impression that none of the shippers I spoke to were very interested - as I was a once-only client. In the end I have negotiated a 4-door sedan for NZ$20 per day (repeat $NZ20 per day)as I was renting for 8 weeks. Let me know if you want their details. I plan to take some 4WD trips whilst over in NZ - propbably hire a vehicle for a few days and join a tagalong operator.
Best wishes - Adrian C

Hi Adrian,

Thanks for your response, I would be interested in the car hire firm you talked with. Also which shippers did you talk to I might have a go myself.

Hi

I'm interested in doing this myself and would
like to see what the outcome of this was. I have
had similar disinterest from shippers so would
like to hear details of anyone that can actually
do it!

Thanks in advance..

Try McArthur Shipping who are the Brisbane agents for Kiwi Car Carriers tel 07 3262 7466. I know Kiwi Car Carriers service Brisbane, but I expect they call at other Australian ports. Or you could try NYK Line 07 3224 0444.
