What I would like to know is: Does the GQ gearbox have a similar problem to the old Toyota gearboxes where the seal between the transfer box and gearbox goes pear shaped and then pumps the gear oil back from the T case into G box??
We used to fit a bypass hose from inlet to inlet to solve the proble on the old Tojos
I get a whiff of G oil every now and then and there is some oil leaking out of the filler screw. Looks like there might be some pressure in there.
Anyone in the know?
Cheers

Haven't heard of it Willem but like the old tojo's it probably breathes through the boot at the top of the gearbox where the stick goes in as they don't have a seperate breather.
What might be happening is that the bottom boot on the gearbox /gearstick has stuck to the case rather than being loose. Also the boot into the interior may have a small hole allowing fumes into the cabin.
The filler shouldn't leak, might need a new sealing washer, if its copper just heat it up on the stove to soften it and reuse it.

Willem,
I recall from my old Mav (GQ) that when I was working it hard in 4wd on steep slopes, I also got a whiff of hypoid oil. Put it down to hot oil smell coming out of the diff/gbox breathers. Never found a leak anywhere, and it never gave trouble.
My current GU hasn't exhibited that effect.

Hi Willem,
Ours is a May '92 Mav TD42 and towing Jayco working hard we do get a whiff of gear oil but has not been detrimental and no leaks. I do the oil changes and all seems normal each time. I replaced the transfer rubber boot some years back after a mouse appeared to have taken a liking to it. A hole chewed through when we were at
Ningaloo. Both boots are in good shape but the whiff still gets through after changing between 4th and 5th.
I don't think it's anything to be concerned about. Just the pong is not the best.
Good luck

Willem, (what a great name)
The cruiser box had a seal betwen the gearbox and the transfer, if it leaked... (you know the story).
The patrol is different.
The gearbox has its rear oil seal, then a space box attaches to the g'box, the tranfer box attaches to the spacer.
The transfer box has it own front seal and rear seal.
If either the g'box or transfer box leak (rear seal on the g'box or front seal on the transfer), the oil would go into the spacer which has a drain hole down the bottom, the bottom line is (and the asnwer to your question), the oils would never ever mix.

Thanks Will and everyone else for your replies.
Good to know it isn't a seal problem.
Maybe I will just put some waterpipe tape around the filler plug thread to contain the ooze.
Cheers

Willem,
The factory uses a
grey sealant when they fit all plugs. You can get that sealant from Nissan or spare parts
places.
I use a wrap of teflon tape on all the filler and drain pipes and works fine.
Do not tighten these plugs too much, the gas tread makes the alloy expand and crack of you tighten it too much.

The GQ box (as found behind 4.2 diesel and petrol versions) is one the most long lasting boxes found on any '4WD'.
Mine had over 500,000 on the original box, it made no noises, sycros were perfect and didnt leak a drop of oil. Seen lots of simlar examples. They also have syncro on reverse. I know you were only asking about leaks to the transfer.........

Hi Willem
I was getting the gear box wiff on my GQ when working the box hard or on long fast Hwy runs. I manually traced the breather lines the Transfer case breather joined to the G-box breather above the box then this lines runs forward and up the engine bay fire wakk the front diff breather joins in there. so if you have extended you front diff breather you are also extending your G-box and T-case breathers as there all one. I had extended
mine to high on the engine bay fire wall on the passengers side. as the box was worked hard the fumes were then being sucked in to the A/C fan intake which is just behind at the grilles below the wind screen. I added a repco generic fuel filter but not much improvement then I got a kids balloon and but the mouthpiece over the filter out let. as a bladder. when the car is hot atere a long run it is just slightly inflated up some what but no streach in the rubber and when cold it like just out of the bag. I have not had a wif of G-box oil since.

Thanks Jugs
I think that the breather is the culprit. The gearbox has been out 3 times in the last 18 months and I think my mechanic did something to it last time. I asked him to have a look and he reckoned everything was OK. I better do the job myself when I get the inclination to crawl around on the concrete floor :-)
