Hello Crew,
My 2006 Troopy has exactly the same headlights as my 1985 model Troopy had and the same as my mates 1993 model Troopy. Sealed beams. (perfect for the technology in 1985, somewhat useful in 1993, not so useful in 2006)

Any suggestions on replacements from newer technology and places to source said lights?
I do know about the benefits of loom upgrades and will perform this at the same time as the light change.

Geoff.

hz75,
After 1999, the troopies got coil spring front end, longer rear leaves and shackles, and better bushes, and a few other minor changes. Big change was in late 2001 when they introduced the factory turbo diesel as an option. The TD got a stronger gearbox as well.

Hi hz75,

What Phil G has said is spot on, there are a couple of other subtle changes too. Most subtle is the location of the radio aerial, it was in the right guard, it's now in the left to clear the factory snorkel. You also get a rear window wiper/washer (large window only) They also all now come standard with the twin 90 litre tanks.

Mines an RV specification model meaning it is a 5 cloth seater. Consists of front buckets, rear bench. Has carpet, electric windows (no quarter window), central locking, power aerial and CD/Tape/AM-FM radio. It also comes standard with the factory Turbo Diesel.

All 78 & 79 Series Landcruisers have a choice of transmission as long as your choice is 5 Speed manual. My teenage daughters can't get their head around manual transmissions!

The guy in the shed next to ours at work and I where only talking today about Troopy's and the lack of significant change over the years. It really is one of their strengths for die hard Troopy men like me.
Toyota really do tend to follow a proven formula with the Troopy's, they don't consider it broke so they don't need to fix it. A subtle tweak here and there over the years!

My ultimate retirement job is joining the Troopy R&D team, one meeting a year of about 10 minutes and then back to whatever you where doing.

Geoff,

No matter what, you'll need to buy headlight inserts - I have the IPF from ARB (about $120).

Secondly, you can decide which H4 globes to buy. ARB will suggest you either fit their "Fat Boy" Xenon globes ($142pair)which do not require a loom upgrade, or their IPF 110/80watt globes ($46) which will require a loom upgrade ($120). I am currently running the Narva plus50 ($29pair).

My preference is for Inserts and Fat boy globes. That way you can keep the wiring standard and avoid a loom which involves 3 extra relays and a heap of extra wiring.

I've had the inserts + loom +110/80 and the light thrown out is better than standard but is no better than a mate's fatboys.

I'm currently running the inserts + Narva plus50 with standard wiring and the light is acceptable, and better than the sealed beams. But I don't often drive at night, so am easily satisfied.

If you're interested in a half price ARB loom, then member message me.

Cheers
Phil

Thanks Phil,
That's the sort of information I was chasing.

If you wish to do it on the cheaper side; take one of the sealed beams out and go to your local auto parts stores and ask what they have in the way of replacement headlights which will take a standard halogen insert.

Did this with the old crappy Hilux lights and was a major improvement for approx $60.

I've used Hella H4 inserts and standard 55/60 globes for years in troopies with no probs.
I did try the higher output globes 80/130 and found them to have a much shorter life due probably to the extra heat and vibration.
I made up an auxilary wiring harness using one headlight socket to trigger it all which gave similar light output from standard globes as the high output ones.
If making up a harness run the power supply direct from the battery as the aux power connection box under the bonnet WILL NOT run higher outputs than the fuses fitted. Bigger fuses will lead to meltdown of the fusebox! BTDT ;-))
