G’day folks,

Just looking for advice, been looking at 3” system for the GU TD
have been told by a few exhaust places that most people don’t put any
mufflers on these systems

Can anyone who may have done this give me an idea of the extra noise
it will give off?

I realize the turbo will kill a lot of it but……..

Cheers

I've put a Beaudesert 3" on my GU fitted with a straight through muffler as recommended by them and it's pretty damn quiet. So, I would expect no muffler to be not too noisy at all, although you may get a bit of droning on the black top.

We have 3 inch systems on both our trucks with mufflers and there noiser enough, I think they are quite louder without a muffler. I suppose it depends on how much attention you want to attract I suppose.

Thanks for the replies

I don’t want to attract any undue attention to myself at all (bugger that)
my other reason for looking at this was to stop the amount of
Spinifex that gets caught on top of the muffler

Mates GQ had a small ish fire on a resent trip on the Tallawana track
So was thinking this may also be of benefit

But the noise issue was a concern

About to get mine done Monday and am fitting basically a straight through muffler to avoid "droning" which would drive us insane. ( my stupid days are over), I'll let you know how it goes. I read somewhere Denco have the 3" dumpipe for sale at $165 at the moment for the 4.2td diesel. the system is costing me $800.00 fitted with mandrel bends.

I could not believe the difference in size for the dump pipe. The restriction is very obvious and the new system has definetly increased torque and now allows the motor to pull right through the rev range. I had the missus with me when we went to a hill that we use to gauge the pulling power and where we were back to 3rd we now am easily making it in 4th whilst increasing revs. She was at saying "cant you hear that?" referring to the turbo whistle out the back but me working around noise a lot in the past has made it not noticable for me. The price came back for $700.00 cash as he is a friend of a mutual mate.

Money well spent!

Try Rob Bliss in Geebung (Brisbane) Pezza was saying his come from there and cost $300 less than Beaudesert. I know Bruce and Anne got two MU's fitted here also and worked out heaps cheaper.
Ph 07 33913112

No affiliation with them of course.

Mines Beaudesert, but I didn't know about Rob Bliss at that time :-(((

Price quoted from Beaudesert

We make a 3" mild steel mandrel bent system which comes right off the back of the turbo to suit your Nissan 4.2ltr GU. The price is $895 plus $25 packaging plus freight. (Freight to Melbourne approx $70)

Trevor beat me to it, the one I had fitted at Blissy's also has stainless bends, supplied and fitted $670. including the dump pipe.
Truckster, I read your thread a while back but thought I was just wasting your time in replying as I coudn't really add anything of use to you, knowing you were down there, thinking about it now though I suppose you could always ask Rob if he'll ship you an assembled system down there, I'm sure he still has some stainless bends.

Trucky,

Just spoke to Rob, he doesn't make a bolt on system for mailing, but he has just started to distribute a pre-made bolt-on which he is happy with quality wise, it's made by Mercury, is mild steel all the way, unlike the one I had done with stainless bends which he doesn't do anymore as the bends were a one-off special, he picked up 800 of them and has sold them all, follows the same lines as the stock system and tucks up nicely he reckons.
Said he checks each system out before sending it to make sure it's ok, ( sales spiel more likely, but sounds good )
I do know the guy is honest and has a good reputation, I have had systems done there for the last 15 years, there was a time when if you wanted a system for performance applications you went nowhere else.
The bolt-on system he sells is $880 plus $25 freight ( don't know why Beaudesert want $70)
Have check around down there, you might find some-one who sells the same system, if not, the choice is yours, the beaudesert one might be $100 more, but at least there are a few guys here that have used them and can vouch for them, unlike the Mercury system, where you have to rely on Rob's word.
Anyone local interested, he will make the build - on - the - car system that he normally makes, for $740 including dump. Steel has increased 30% in last 12 months.

Oh, and Trevor, you got the wrong phone number up mate, the one you posted is for Australian exhaust systems, the correct one is 07 32652044.

A mate has a TD Hilux with straight through pipe, 3 inch I think. His is slightly louder but not ridiculously so, the theory is that running the gases through the turbo quietens them down anyway, works for heavy vehicles, your kenworths etc don't run mufflers.

Hey Gmouse,
I started with a 3" system on my GU 4.2 TD without a muffler
-I loved it... wife didn't!!!
Had to go back and get straight through 3" muffler fitted to appease the boss- still has a good note.
Without muffler IS quite loud- especially under acceleration. Driving though your main street EVERYONE will turn around, trying to work out where THAT infernal noise is coming from!

Hi,
If you are in Brisbane try Men at Work at Capalaba. They fitted my straight through system for $300. No muflers flexible connection for turbo and the turbo takes care of any exhaust noise.

I thank you all for your responses…

By the sound of it, I will put a straight through muffler on system
I have been waiting for TJM in Seaford to get in there stainless
System for a few weeks, but they have had some drama with
Manufacturer

I will give them another couple of weeks if not, may give Beaudesert a go
Thanks (Truckster) for the info

Cheers

3" Beaudesert system on the 4.2 diesel with a muffler. Before I put the muffler on I did a trip up and down the road with a pipe under the cabin. It wasn't too bad but it is easier on longer driving for the ears with a muffler.

I just got a 3" on my 80 series and it has a muffler but is still loud. See if you can test drive one with the same kit first. Im about to go pay more cash to make it quieter- Its the looks from the boys in blue Im not a fan of. With the stereo loud you cant hear it, but each time I drive past a retaining wall, bus stop, dirt embankment etc its bloody noisy.
