I am about to purchase a set of Goodyear Mtrs for the GU4 with 17" Rims,
the size is 265 70 r17 and the stock tyre that comes with the vehicle is 275 65 r17
the qustion is if dont get a new tyre for the spare and have to put it on being a slightly different profile size will this pose a problem???

Hi David, yup - I think it will cause a problem.
Firstly the rolling diameter will be different see the following link to work out the difference
http://www.lrc.org.au/4wdstuff/tyre.xls - reasonably slight but results in 11 rpm difference at 100kmh. This needs to be worked out by the diff, and the nissan has a slippery diff? which probably won't like being abused in this way.
The other reason is that you have a spare to put on when you get a puncture. Mostly my punctures have been in the bush, putting a stock spare HT on with 3 mtr's means you will compromise things. Especially if the going is tough - which is why you buy MTR's.
The HT will be more prone to punctures (and your obviously in puncture country - thats the reason you have put on the ht cause the much tougher mtr just got punctured).
imho - spend the bucks get 5 and keep rotating them when you switch from ht daily ht's to the weekend mtr's.
Paul.

Mate, spend the exta bucks and you will not regret it. Came across the same dilemma when changing to BFG's last year but spent the extra and have not lookd back. I have not had to use the spare (yet) since but if I do I do not have to worry about one weaker tyre.

do it right, and do it once, buy 5.
then sell the OEM ones on Ebay for what you can as a set of 5 - easier to sell that way

HI David,
I have just had the same problem and nearly got myself into a spot of trouble.
I bought my Patrol 04 GU 3.0TD, I put some tyres on the car after I wore out the standard tyres a bigger tyre, standard size was 265/70/16, I put 285/75/16 BFG AT(by far the best tyres I have ever had). I was being cheap and only bought 4 not 5, just planning a trip next week to
Rockhampton and have had a bugger of a time trying to find a second hand spare of similar tread to what I have, spent a couple of hours searching and picking up a new/second hand tyre as a spare that is the right size, for $285 I could have bought a brand new tyre at the time of purchase and had it on the back of the car from the begining. the hours spent would be worth about the same as the cost of a new tyre. I have been running the gauntlet of the wrong size spare for 50,000k's, I have been lucky and touch wood, have not had a flat in 2 years.
Moral to the story:
Somtimes I am not a smart man, do it once do it right.
Ben.

My owners manual (Prado) tells me to rotate all 5 tyres every 5000 klm, can anyone shed any light on why I should not do this?
