Wheel Carriers - Carry Me Camper

Calling any forumite that has a Carry Me Camper, I'm after ideas on how to carry or mount 1 or 2 spare wheels at the reay of my Carry Me Camper. Unfortunately, my tray is just a wee bit too short to carry the spares up at the headboard and there isn't enough room under the tray (unless some major mods take place).

Cheers, CraigD.

Thanx Bruce. Probably because I haven't seen the back of his rig :) Checked his rig pics, too.

Cheers.

There is a Candy Camper locally that has two spares and an extendable firewood carrier on the back. I tend to carry only one spare most of the time these days but carry a tyre on the top just in case needed. Don't like to carry too much weight up high or too much at the back way behind the axle either.

A mate of mine carries his spares inside the camper at the cab end mainly to keep the weight forward from the rear wheels

Already have 2x DCG's, 55 litre water tank and the Engel already fitted there, so not an option for me. I do however, currently have my spare laying flat inside the camper in front of the rear axle (if that makes sense?), but as I continue to fit out the camper it will have to go elswhere. Is your mates a Carry Me??

Craig, it is a Carry Me Camper. He bought it a couple of years ago and he is very happy with it.

Cheers Des. Everyone seems to love theirs - haven't had ours out yet as I am still fitting it out, but will be trying out probably next weekend once I finish the 'kitchen'.

Hi Craig

Contact Candy, they do them or cantact Muddy by member message and chat to him about it. We will have the camper available for most of the day tomorrow and you can have a look at it if you want. We have the double wheel carriers that Candy supplieed, it's excellent.....no lifting the tyres up.

I have asked Candy about the carrier (waiting on a reply by email). Am interestyed in the Candy duel carriers but haven't seen them in the flesh. I didn't know Muddy had a Carry Me Camper (?).

Hi Craig

NP.....happy to help.

Al made a good point there as I was wondering the same thing too when I looked at your rig pic, it looks low in the back end of the Lux?

Have you got air bags fitted?
If not you will find they will make a huge difference in leveling the 4BY up and then the carries on the back will be no problem.

If you leave a member message for Muddy he will get it when he gets home from work and boots up EO.

Actually, it's a 4.2 Patrol and the pic is decieving as it sits level. I will probably have my rear towers strengthened and then upgrade the suspension AND fit Poly's. Thanx for the advice and I left a Member Message for Muddy, however I don't have the net at home so won't see a reply until Monday. Ciao.

Hi Craig

I know Muddy is feeding his face so he will get it when he gets back into the office.

The Carryme is originally mine but it's ours now.

We saw a bloke in Ceduna a few months ago and he had the duel carriers too so I'm assuming they still make them.
The duel was the way to go for the small amount of extra money for them.

Craig, If you are doing a lot of driving over corrugations, keep an eye on the supports where the tray is joined to the chassis. I don't mean the posts but the RHS type tube that interconnects each section. last year on the Gunbarrel, a Patrol ute travelling with us had a problem where the RHS tube began to crush under the weight and the corrugations. We had to do some bush welding to repair the damage. He didn't have a Carry Me topper but a canvas canopy and Shippshape roof topper. He replaced it when he got home with thicker walled RHS.

Have a sticky beak at a Telstra/NDC ute with the moulded/enclosed units on the rear of the tray.
They carry two spares on a (relatively) simple canti-levered system which enables an able bodied person to lift them from ground level to the carrying posy , centre rear of the unit.

Cheers

I'd like to second the telstra set up, from what I have seen, you bolt the spare to the carrier at ground level, and it is hinged at tray level, so you only have to lift slghtly more than half of the weight of the spare (and carrier), and importantly, it is a controlled lift - no lateral movement, no twisting to line up bolt holes etc.

When I age a bit, I hope they invent one for the wagon......

Cheers Andrew

Hi Craig,

Can also use a 750R16 on a Nissan split rim as a spacesaver spare.

I had a shed day last weekend. I lifted my tray 1cm with spacers, then carved out a few aluminium folds under the tray bed, which meant I could slide a deflated split-rim with 750R16, as my second spare. Needed about 180mm of space to slip in a split rim. Anyway, once its in, I put some pressure in the tyre to hold it tight as a drum. As you know, my first 265/75 spare is on the back. I rarely change a tyre for a puncture - prefer to plug them on the vehicle for many reasons, so I figure my second spare can be a "spacesaver" and its no big deal if it takes 5 minutes to get it out.

Cheers
phil
