Forumites,
OK, took the vehicle my 3.0 ltr TD into my local Nissan agent on Tuesday morning to get things checked out. My concerns were heightened as soon as I started the vehicle to be met with the normal sweet sound of the engine all the noises it usually makes, no belt noise................ Do I still go or not, seeing I had the appointment and I "assumed" the noise would start between home and the agent. Nah not a dickie bird (pardon the pun).
Service manager comes out "So what seem to be the problem sir?" "The serpentine belt squeaks when the engine is running", "Errrrrrrrr sounds alright to me sir", "yes it does doesn't it". So at this point I was looking for a shovel to start diggin my hole I was going to crawl into.
The service manager took my machine into the workshops were they check the pulley alignment, this appears to be OK, but as was pointed out by many respondents the tensioner looks suss, could be just the little shock absorber / tensioner device rather than the pulley in the tensioner mechanism. The bushes on the little shock absorber are prone to wear the garage had replaced quite a few, they keep six on the shelf as spares this was a good enough indication to me I was on the right track. So I'm ready for when the infamous squeak starts again.
So again thanks to all who contributed and suggested ideas, hope the feedback may help someone in the future.

as a nissan tech we often seem to be accused of giving the "standard" response of "can't fault at this time " but you see that it does happen...please don't lump all techs in one basket.. sure there arre some dodgy ones out there, but the fact is no dealer should try and dodge a warranty claim as it is easy money.. paid pretty much straight away..
i iknow myself when friends complain of a noise, they bring the car around and you can't hear anything... sometimes s**t happens

Bit like the teenager with a toothache that's miraculously gone when you get to the dentist....
A wise old technician once advised this apprentice.
"Don't worry son, the problems that go away by themselves come back by themselves..."
