Planning our trip to SA and was thinking of following the Darling River from Bourke to Willcania. Two 4bys one with c/trailer one with offroad c/van.

Just looking for a bit of feedback on conditions, how long it takes etc.

The paroo needs to have an extremely big flood to reach the darling. It has aparantly only reached the darling a few times in white mans history. I traveled from wilcannia to tilpa on the broken hill side and then crossed over the river for the rest of the way(This is supposed to be the best way) The road was very good. Cheers

lived in white cliffs for 18 yrs and seen the paroo met the darling twice,
as the man said it has got to be a big river to reach the darling.
i doubt there has been a big enough rain upstream to do this.cheers

I think we did it in a few hours or half a day, including walking around by the bend in the river and around Louth. If it rained it might be slippery - if it ever rains there. You can go either side of the river. Pleasant drive.

Make sure that you have a beer at the Tilpa pub, & don't hang around Wilcannia for too long!

Correct .... both in Wilcannia & Bourke. We were advised to stay away from Bourke at the moment, apparently it isn't uncommon to have rocks thrown at passing vehicles, especially if they look like tourists!

Yeah don't think we'll blend in to well, what with the vans and mum taking photos of anything and everything.

Might have to adjust itinerary.

If you have the time try the Killara sheep station about 25 Km NorthEast of Tilpa.
Great camping with reasonable facilities right on the banks of the Darling. approx 10 - 15 sites

Hi Cackles,
You may want to also while you are in the area stop off at Menindee, great place around that way, my brother in law was the local copper there for a while and we used to get out there about three times a year, if your wife likes to photograph the lakes around Menindee are gorgeous subject to shoot at sunset and sunrise, I should know I am a photographer myself. There is the Maidens Hotel or the caravan park to stay in, I may be bias but its a great place out there to explore. The locals around that way are usually pretty good as there is no lock up at Menindee, closest lock up is 110km away at Broken Hill, the threat from the local Police of driving them that far away and they have to get themselves back to town is usually enough to settle most problems.
Wilcannia is a place that I would certainly give a wide birth to.
Thanks, Ben.

Sounds good Ben, I am into photography (I am also the wife) and like the idea of swimming without sharks, stingers and crocodillies! I'll have a research.

Lived in Menindee for 35 years until 1997. Great place to grow up. Good camping spots on the western side of the river between Menindee and the Main Weir. Not much water in Menindee Lakes but plenty in Pamamaroo and Wetherall. Camping at the Main Weir on on the lake are good also. Wouldn't bother camping at the NP. Most of the properties on either side of the river from Wilcannia to Menindee will allow campers and some good spots. Local police are good but still strict. Broken Hill police regularly make a trip to catch the unawares. Brothers own the servo and transport in town. Happy to pass on any more info if you need it.
