I've seen 5.0 litres V8's (carby type ex VH commodore) in 75 series cruisers so your 80 should be do able. An EFI 5.0 litre?, who knows, I assume it would fit. Have you looked at a second hand 80 series engine and maybe throw in some new rings and bearings and compared this to the transplant, modifications, hooking it up to gas and legalities?
Best of luck.
BTW, how many k's had your last engine done?

i looked in to one of them for my GU and was quoted any where from $15,000, up to $21000 ish with out turbo, from linquip & brunswick over in
perth! & thats for a 2.8 gu & including having the clutch & gearbox swapped as
well, there not as srong as the 4.2s and with the diesel prices going the way they are i couldn't justify going for one also i don't do enough heavy towing
as Dedalus (SA) said that he already has gas hooked up so the 5.0 (308) efi or even carby would be perfect swap provided where u live & the need for a long range between drinks?

Yeah bung a V8 in it, hell you would probably get better fuel consumption than what the 4.5 gave ya.
My mate has a statesman with the 5 litre in it, on a run from Kalgoorlie to
Perth (600K’s) cruising at 120Kp/h it returned around 10 litres per 100, pulled into his driveway just as the fuel light came on.

If your going to put a V8 in it , don't muck around with the 5.0L Holden.
Stick a 5.7l Gen 3 in it. Just make sure it's out of a VY or VZ. That way you shouldn't get one of those rattly oil burning POS.
The Gen3 makes way more horsepower is lighter, smoother ,queiter and doesn't sound like some guy slapping a couple of thongs together..
Saw a GQ ute with one in it at the Cape when we were up there not long ago.
Cheers Col

Forgot the important thing.
It'll also use less fuel than the 5.0L

Hi Luca,
Yes 5 litre efi would be good transplant, at wreckers for about $2000 these days, plus marks adaptor kit and a few changes. Have a mate with 4.2 deisel doing the maths at the moment and going that way on gas in his trol.
He was saying go with a after market type computer setup, rather than the original holden one, will find out more for you if you get that fa.
Will see you in 6 weeks too mate when our 4wd club will be coming to the island for 9 days
Cheers Pesty
