Just a double check on info I read. Is it true that the front diff breather of the GU end in the air intake and when a snorkel is installed, there is no need for a manual diff breather extention as would be the case for the rear ?

Not true AFAIK. The front diff as well as the gearbox and tranny case have their breathers going to the to the passenger's side inner guard, not far from the firewall.

Putting snorkel on it doesn't (AFAIK) have any affect on this aspect. I've left my gearbox and tranny case breathers alone, but several years ago I bought a Pirahna kit which included enough hose and 2 breather filters, for 2 installations, so I did both diffs (but didn't really need to do the front one, in hindsight).

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Yes as roachie said they go into the top of the guard near the snorkel but not into the snorkel as such.

I always thought breather extensions were only needed on Toyota’s

Heya Corn,,I didnt even bother extending my breathers and i havent had any water in anything...
My breather doesnt go into my snorkel....
I havent been cooling my diffs either,,, just straight through the drink hot...

It is not recommended to enter deep water with hot diffs...

The GU standard setup is good...unless you stop dead...

G'day Voxson,

Have you checked out the rear diff set-up? I think you'll find it's worth doing THAT one.......Just my opinion...YMMV

I have more faith in the rear setup than the front setup to be honest....
The rear breather plumbs into the 'top' of that crossover tube with little vent/drainholes at each end....
That tube has a capacity of 3 litres,,, which is a great idea because as you know water/air will go in through the path of least resistance,,,,,so that tube is like a holding tank for air....
I believe that even if you stopped in a river and tried to let it fill up,,,,, the air trapped inside would hold off the water anyway,,,, so in my opinion its a great system i would be happy to leave alone...

If you can see a flaw in what i believe please educate me,, but to date i have never ever had any signs of water in my driveline....

Those inline fuel filters people use to cap off their extensions,,, i believe are too restrictive....

Worth a check before each trip IMO as on my last trip it seems that mine mysteriously came undone during a service.

Kind regards

Our rear diff breather hose came adrift on the GRR recently too. Although I checked the car out every day, didn't pick it up at first as the hose sat on top of the fuel tank. No major problems however as it was picked up and the diff oil changed (twice).

Thanks chaps ............. I have done the back anyway ............I have enough hose left for the front, so I'll have a few JB's and think about doing the front ........
