Today I purchased the LED bulb upgrade for my 2 , 3 and 4 D size models .
The 2 D now has a stronger beam than my 4D with the old bulb , and with the LED you get longer battery life .

The conversion is about $67 and really worth the money .

Cheers ,

Willie

Hi Willie,
Is it a genuine Mag Lite accessory, or is it a generic supply?

Stephen ,

It is a genuine Mag-lite accessory . On it says that if you use non genuine upgrades you void your warranty .

Speaking of warranty , it seems to be lifetime , anything fixed and no questions asked . Twice I have dropped and buggered the lenses on my torches , told the agent the truth and they still fixed them no charge . Not bad eh .

Willie .

Steve ,
I got them at the knife / shoe repair shop at Westfield Chatswood . They also sell them at the knife shop at Macquarie Centre . I reckon most gun shops would sell them too as well as some camping stores .
Cheers ,

Bonz ,
That is good news , as I heard that Mag-lite was not doing an upgrade for that model . I will nip down to Jaycar Silverwater and get one .
Thanks ,
Willie .

Bonz,
I bought the C/D maglite LED from Jaycar - $21.95 and put it in one of the snakelights we take camping. Its got the same base as all the common globes.

Cheers
Phil

Jaycar have had the AA Maglite LED upgrade for quite some time now.
However after fitting the kit the torch will only have a fixed focus. I have fitted only one of our 2 AA Maglites for this reason, because at certain times the pin-point focussing of the standard globe system is quite useful/good.

Bonz,

Check this link

The Jaycar one is one of those unknown brands, but its made for the maglite.
Don't know if theres a difference in light output, but I'm happy with the way it works - but snakelights never were great technology!

Cheers

my experience with led torches has been lack of light at moderate distance in comparison to the original style bulb....has maglite overcome this in the AA size torch?

Russ ,
Mag-lite don't make an upgrade for that size , but have come out with a new Mini model with LED . I know what you mean and it seems the only way to overcome that problem is to have an array of three LEDs in the head . I have not seen the new Mini Mag-lite so I am not sure what it has . I will go to their website for a look .

I got the "night ize" ones from Jaycar yesterday for both my wife's "mini" and my 3 cell Maglite and I have to say I'm very disappointed in the light output. The light isn't as bright as the standard globes and quite blue in colour. In contrast I've also got a "dorcy" led torch bought from Dick Smiths for the grand total of $39.95 and it comes with the "luxeon" 1 watt globe and it absolutely kills the Maglite hands down in brightness (both incandescant and Led) and the light is a bright white in colour.
The Maglite is certainly the better built light but in performance the Dorcy leaves it in the shade. (pun intended)
Willie, what colour is the light from the genuine Maglite Led's (white or blueish) and how does it compare in brightness with the standard globes?
Regards Andrew.

There are two sorts of LED's, your standard LED upgrade I've seen for the AA is just your normal high intensity LED and gives off a blueish light, and is not that bright. But then there is your Luxeon LED, they give off a white light and are very bright but draw more current than your standard LED. I got a few AAA luxeon LED torches off EBAY and for the size are very bright. So is the $67 upgrade a Luxeon LED, for that price and if it's brighter than the standard bulb I'd say it probably is.

Andrew ,

Yes I just went out and checked off the back deck - the light is very blue compared with the original bulb . Hmm .

I don't know if it's a Luxon but by the blue light I would say not .

In my original post I said that the 2D was brighter than the 4D with the old bulb .
After I compared the 2D LED with my 5D original , the 2D LED was not nearly as bright , so maybe I got carried away . It is certainly a lot brighter than the 2D with the old bulb though . ( My 4D is now LED so I cannot compare them now )

I think I might leave the old globe in my 2AA so I can keep the adjustable focus . I only use it when I am travelling and keep it in my toiletry bag .

Cheers ,

Willie .

Well, I've done some web surfing this evening and I've found this fantastic site that compares all sorts of flashlights and bulbs/led's it's at
flashlight reviews
I've also found quite a bit of info on the "nite ize" Led's I bought from Jaycar.
Nite Ize C and D cell
Nite Ize Mini maglite
The genuine Maglite Led writeup is here
Maglite Genuine
It appears the genuine Maglite is a 3 watt Luxeon Led and the Nite Ize one is only a 1 watt standard Led and the write up on the genuine one was pretty good. Check out the USA price as well at $17 US, someone out here is making a good profit.
What amazes me is the range of bulbs/Led's available in the USA just for Maglites and that's without any other manufacturers they have as well.
Regards Andrew.

Oh, and here's the one that's a "must have" for Fathers Day. It's an HID flashlight for the search and rescue teams.
Fathers Day Wishlist
It's a steal at $399.95 plus an extra $60 dollars for the Search and Rescue kit and case.
Oh, and those are US $ too not pretend $
Now, how to raid the kids piggybank without them noticing it?
Regards Andrew.
