Just crawled under my Pathfinder, 02/06, & had a look at the compliance plate on the towbar......3000kg towing capacity & 300kg tow ball weight.

Mark,

I mentioned in my post that Nissan stated they later tested the towbar and decided to alter the manufacturer's rating, as they considered it could take more weight.

You probably got one of the 'new rated ones'. Mine has a sticker which refers you to another sticker on the door which states 300K. I dont consider, and neither does most insurance companies, a sticker on the door as being the compliance plate.

I understand Nissan later changed the actual compliance plates on the towbars to suit their tests.

I would prefer to take the towbar manufacturers tested ratings.

The lower ball weight dependant on the loading weight in the vehicle is to make sure people do not overload the vehicle. It wont alter the weight the towball SHOULD be able to carry.

You will find most car manufacturers are now starting to alter their towball load ratings to show that although you may load the car to the max of, say 750K, you can't then plonk a caravan on the ball with an extra 350K.

I am not a Pathfinder owner, but my recollection of the research I did when I was looking for a new 4WD was that the 3000/300kg limits only apply if the inside of your 4WD is empty. Start adding an internal load, or passengers/kids, or a combination of both, and the allowable legal limit slides progressively downwards.
There should be something about this in your manual, or contact a Nissan dealer.

So if the inside of the vehicle is empty, that implies that the caravan (and the vehicle) is not going anywhere!!
Should be quite safe under those conditions!

Think he's referring to a problem found with new Pathies where it says you can't use weight distributing hitches with them. No doubt about the integrity of the towbar, but try towing 2.5 T with only tow ball and you'll soon see the need for weight distribution I thing. Apparently the Pathy towbars can't accommodate them.

I guess the question that needs to be asked. Is the towbar a genuine Nissan one or Hayman Reece? Looking at the photo's of Pelbo's genuine Nissan one I wouldn't recommend it for towing a 6x4 garden trailer.

Tow bar might be rated 3000/300 but what is the vehicle rated for?

New Pathie rated to 3000/300. Post a few nights back suggested this not really advisable or a true indication of what is possible.

I think the post was removed. It indicated a far from being happy Pathfinder owner with Nissan, the Pathfinder and the tow bar as the guy's caravan broke away from he Pathfinder when the bolts fixing the tow bar sheared off.

Your right. It's just I missed it a second time because it had been overtaken by many more posts. They come thick and fast nowadays. My apologies ExplorOz.
