Hi, Im relatively new to 4x4's and i have had 1999 Hilux 3.0 5L Diesel ute since Oct 2005 - it has always had a bit of a ticking sound in the engine, but runs really well. It sounds a little lick an old fashioned tappet noise. It has now started to get worse. Its off to the doctors this week, but i was wondering if anyone has any ideas what it may be????

My thoughts Valves?? Bearings?? Although i thought bearing would be more a clunking sound.

Cheers

It may be the valve clearance, its a simple process to adjust using a feeler guage.

Could well be a cracked exhaust manifold, they are known to be avery good engine overall. Good luck!

G'day Paul,
I have a 2002 3.0TD Hilux that had a ticking noise that sounded exactly like the noise you have described. During routine maintenance I adjusted the tension on the alternator belts and gave the sides a good lick with a dry lube stick, I haven't heard the ticking since.

If you were putting the Lux into the shop just for the noise you might want to have a look at those belts first, could save yourself a few bucks.

Cheers,
Heefers

Is it worse at startup or when the engine is warm? Or no difference? Exhaust manifold leak usually gets worse when engine has warmed up. Tappet noise most noticeable at startup.

If it is a cracked or leaking exhaust manifold you may be able to see it by looking in the engine bay when it is completely dark and the engine running. Gun the accelerator a few times as well.

Worse at start up. But still noticable afterwards. There appears to be no difference in performance - its just a annoying ticking.
