PS have more photos of it, its yellow, and actually uglier and more plastic than the web photos could ever have made it look....

Thats the new cruiser that will be on sale by end of year.

More like an uprated RAV4 going by it's price on the US web site.

FJ Cruiser $21,700 US
RAV4 $20,850 US
Landcruiser $56,215 US

I saw one in the flesh in Aspen the other last weekend. I wouldn't buy one myself but it didn't look too bad. They are much bigger than a RAV. Not sure if they are as big as a cruiser - perhaps Prado 120 size. You lose a bit of perspective here with all the massive pick-ups getting around so it may even be Cruiser size.

Actally I like that ...looks good.Someone told me too that the Troopcarrier is in for a major facelift too mhas a lot to with mines going to Nissan because of the airbags and safety issues ,I think i will keep my old one and just keep doing it up ,Once they move away from $18 headlights and use electronics it becomes too expensive, yeh i know some of you will disagree but i like the basics, i can work with it, We all have heard the stories about electronics failing in the remotest areas.

Dont get carried away boys and girls, this is not the next 100series. It may be related to the 78/9 series replacement ,however...

I thought all you stick in the muds would look past the styling and see the twin turbo v8 diesel and two live axels.

Styling is OK, don't mind the Retro mini Hummer look however the Petrol 4.0 Engine doesn't do much for me, would prefer to see a diesel donk with a bit more hurry up than the current Hilux D4D. As with American released models I'm sure this will look different by the time it reaches Oz.

How could you possibly do that with the ugliest cars on Earth..?? Please solve the mystery..???

What makes a good looking car is somebody's opinion. I personally don't like the Renault, but thats my opinion. Whilst Toyota may not make the best looking cars they quite possibly make the "best" cars. At the end of the day they sell more cars than anyone else in Australia and it isn't due entirely to marketing, it's more closely related to reliability and build quality. Who gives a rats arse whether they tickle everybody's fancy, you have a choice..!

My opinion is they sell a lot of cars because they have a car in every segment in the market. And not just any old car, generally a very good car. But they've had their duds - look at the Toyota Avalon. Ugly, plain, boring and looked like it was designed directly for my 120 year old great, great grand father.

The fact that is was a quality product reliability/quality wise didn't have Ford and Holden shaking in their boots for the large car segment.

Toyota is almost a text book company. Build a good product (generally), market it well and all that...

But as for sales figures not lying, well, interpret them how you want to. I'm sure Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Audi for example aren't too concerned with selling more cars than Toyota for overall market leadership in Australia.

As far as Ford and Holden shaking in their boots Pavo, well perhaps you should ask that question today.? If Toyota keeps stealing sales from them as they are today, how will that effect the Ozzie duo..?? Sales figures don't lie and I don't need to interpret them, they interpret themselves, bigger means better. Toyota is number 1, even if they don't make the best looking cars in the world.

Pavo, you may be interested to know that Toyota is also the wealthiest car company in the world, Im sure all the euro companies would be concerned and envios of that.
According to Forbes, Toyota has no Debt and I forget how many billions of dollars in assests, enough to buy GM and Daimler Chrysler and have plenty of change.
Also Toyota is only marginally behind GM this year for total worldwide sales, they are expected to take over as the number 1 manufacturer worldwide in the next couple of years.

Well said and valid points Camship. I think what underpins Toyota's strength is their vehicles. You don't enjoy that sort of success by making poor vehicles. I have owned the Euro echelon before , my Merc was never as reliable as the Toyota's that are in my household, whilst Toyoya may not make the best looking cars they have made the most reliable that I have personally owned.

TerraFirma, camship, I agree with you both. On almost any test, Toyota are number one. Like I said, I think they are text book example of a great corporation.

And I also agree that NOW Ford and Holden are worried about their declining sales, but my example was for a few years ago and was only about how the better quality product isn't always the biggest seller (my Falcon, Commodore, Avalon example was).

"I think what underpins Toyota's strength is their vehicles".

Yes, they are carmaker! But seriously, I agree and mentioned it above when I said "they generally have got a very good car in every segment".

The simply don't have a weak link anywhere in their lineup - and the Avalon was the only dud I could think of in the last 10 years. And by dud, I mean sales dud, not quality of the product.

I never said they are not reliable honest cars. We have a fleet of 5 Corolla wagons at work that do their job fine.
It's just that they specialise in ugly.
Here's a list of recent shockers

Echo sedan, (it's not even allowed at ladies day at the lawn bowling club)

Current Camry (just superseded with blandness personified.)
Someone described it as suitable for cardigan wearers who just don't care about cars and who'd rather not have one)

New Hilux. Plenty of threads here on that one

Jelly bean Tarago.

Lexus 430 SC (the car that doesn't know if its coming or going and a sales disaster)

As for the Hilux being ugly, why are so many people buying it..? It's the biggest selling thing going at the moment.

Arr the mechanical spec.. That would be 1 small part of it. The reality is the Hilux has served so many Australian buyers well over the years. It has a reputation for reliability and toughness. It was the first true 4x4 Ute developed to work with Australian conditions. Toyota has a string of loyal buyers who keep coming back because they like what they get, albeit their 4x4's seem to be the most famous when it comes to touring Australia.

Well you can take your Nissan Murano or pretty much anything in the Mitsi lineup (particularly the latest Triton) to a car fashion contest and see how they go. I dont really think Toyota make ugly cars, just boring too look at, hence 'Whitegoods on Wheels'. The new Hilux is hovering close to the ugly line but when kitted out it really looks horn.

Mind you this latest FJ is bordering on ugly.

Just read latest 4x4 Australia they mentioned that the new troopy will be very similar to the current model in looks but will offer a 5 door alternative, look similar to the Prado in Africa. Wider by who knows how much, will retain live front axel and get the new donk as well. This means toyota will have the 130 series styled wagon with IFS for all the city come outback tourers. A cruiser ute , a three door troopy with 11 seats, a 5 door troopy with with 5-6 seats, all with a v8 turbo diesel
or petrol alternative with a front live axel. Plus now this retro looking FJ Cruiser, obviously they think there is a market for it somewhere. If what 4x4 Australia said is true, Toyota will offer the only 5 door wagon with a live axel incorporating a v8 diesel, Nissan are set to bring IFS for their new patrol based on the "Alpha Platform, basically a bigger Navara come parthfinder. So in short very soon Toyota look like they will once again dominate the 4wd market in Australia for years to come.

OH WHAT A FEELING!!!!!

Retro sure is ugly. Hate the 'chopped' roofline too. Uglier than the Nissan Cedric (what a name!!).

Don't mind the loss of the very sloped windscreen that was becoming the vogue.

Not as ugly as some French cars but that is saying something. Gen X has lousey taste.

Ignoring how ugly it is or isn't (I think it's awful, but then that's my problem :), does any body have info on suspension, recovery points etc. If I can get the offroad/on road capabilities of a 100 series or Prado in a package that costs more like the Rav4, even if I think it looks hideous, I'll seriously consider it.

Cheers,
