Anyone here got a pair of the GME TX650 handheld UHF radios? (not interested in other GME models). Looking for a pair of radios that are small enough to be carried around in a pocket etc on the farm all day - my father had a heart "flutter" on the farm yesterday and there was no-one in earshot, it was just lucky he was well enough to make it back to the house by himself. Looking for something that's small enough to be out of the way but at hand so that he and mum have some comms should something happen again (he's had diabetes blackouts as well - laying in the dark for 3 hours getting licked on the face by the dog!).

The TX650s look small enough to do the job, and just be dropped in the charger each night. Small enough that they won't get left behind because they're a pain to carry - and at 1W should cover the farm. Read a less than glowing review though on Overlander, would like to hear from some people who may have had them a little longer.

The only other ones that seem to fit the bill are something like the Uniden UH047SX, but they look a bit bulkier.

Hi Scubaro,

We have both Uniden and GME TX650 in use at Mt Dare. Dave and Mel Cox have just bought GNE as their portables and Pat and I already use Uniden. The GME i great, is used as a baby alarm across the site as well as mormal contact. More expensive than Uniden but more unobtrusive product.
Cheers from the real world

G'day Scubaroo, sorry to hear about the old man . We purchased GME TX610's and have found them both reliable and useful, good range, re-chargeable, light and easy to use........and cheaper than TX650.
The TX610 certainly went beyound out expectations!
hope this helps

I have a pair. They work fine but due to the thin size you will never get the same sound quality compared to the speakers in a larger unit. That said I'm happy as the size and weight of the unit makes it unobtrusive and easy to fit in a pocket. More likely to keep it on you all the time. This is the same reason I bought a digital video camera a couple of years ago that uses SD cards because you can fit it any pocket therefore you are more likely to have it with you when needed.

Hi all ,what sort of range do these radios have,a 4-5 klm range would cover our farm and have often thought something like this would be handy safety item.A mobile phone often cannot get a signal if your in a gully or the wrong side of a hill.

Just read the test on overlander.............." not much use beyond 1800m in a straight road test" makes them pretty useless toys for my use/property on that basis.

Scubaroo, maybe a normal mobile phone would be a better alternative. One of the phone companies offered a deal where use btwn two mobile phones was no cost ,i'm not sure if that still applies.May be worth checking out.
