Hi all, currently doing a bit of research on the Holland Track in WA. Nearly all my 4wding has been on day trips and Im just preparing the truck for its first extended trip. got some leave comming and intend to drive the track between Hyden and Coolgardie between 19th and 23rd of Sept. Just a slow meander and camp along the way. Ive got all the recommended recovery equipment, water, food etc soughted out. But Im just wondering if a winch is needed. The research done so far suggests that the track is very easy and safe. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. many thanks.

if you are carefull driving around granite rocks after rain a winch shouldnt be needed but I think most of the ones along the holland track are fenced off anyway. Allow yourself enough time to cruise the cave hill woodlines as that Nthn Area is far more pituresque due to the Holland Track being extensively burnt out less than 2 years ago

Hi nissnut,

I towed my offroad van down the track in 2005 and I don't think I even used 4WD and definitely never used low range. Your preparation sounds fine, however, if its been raining then its a different ballgame.

Cheers

Captain

Thanks Dave and Captain, both mentioned rain so this is obviously the boggyman. I love big bogs but only if other trucks are handy. I'll keep an eye on the forecasts. Thanks guys.

You shouldnt have any issues with puddles- only if it has bucketed down recently. Water pools on the tracks in places but the bottom of the puddles are solid. Do not take any of the chicken tracks around them though or you will get bogged.
Tyre punctures are the only thing I'd be worried about- bring a plug set.

G'day Ben

I passed through your home town a few weeks ago. I kept an eye out for your truck but you must've been at work....LOL.

Gidday BenSpoon, yeh Ive heard of some sort of tree root that loves tyre sidewalls. Being a kiwi [ossie for 10 yrs now] Ive got heaps to learn about this country, its majesty and its traps. Will be carrying a total of 3 spares and the best recovery gear money can buy, a shovel for the missus and a carton of lager for me.
