Have just replaced the orinigal rear springs on the 4runner with lovells EHD springs and am very happy with the result. They are 25mm higher than the orinigal springs. I have actually gained closer to 75mm as the old ones had sagged. While i was at it replaced shocks with Monroe Magums .Very good price from Repco. Ride is firmer but a lot better control in corners and should sit level when towing

What sort of dollars did that set you back?

Thinking of doing the same.

Hi Mazdan
The Lovells springs were $180.00 plus freight and the shocks I brought from Repco for $196 pr. Surprising the cheapest shocks were from the toyota dealership at $66.00 ea. Their is a lot of info on the Lovells website and a questionaire to fill in. they then emailed me with the best springs for the job, and the closest retailer. You wouldnot believe it after spending the money on the 4by my glasses broke today, More money to find.
Cheers Pete

Doug Lovells and Kings Make the springs for just about every after market supplier. The one big advantage of coils is they are so much cheaper than leaves I have had Lovells coils before and found them excellant. They are approx. 50% heavier than the orinigals

And even more suprising is the Toyota shocks are probally the most robust!!

The only problem with the Toyota shocks is that the travel is abmismal! I know heaps of guys with surf's who were running the stock shocks on a 10 year old + car and they were like new when removed (just like mine were). I removed them purley for longer travel and no other reason.

I put HD 2" raised king springs in mine, but they sag again quickly IMHO. Luckily for me I used the firestone poly airbags and that seems to prevent the sag, also stiffens her up a lot when we are loaded making highway driving much more pleasurable. If you are thinking about air bags, for a little over $100 bucks you can order the 4runner bags from www.trucksprings.com, bloody excelent I reckon.

How are the repco shocks for travel? Have you removed your sway bar?

If you have any extra travel with the repco shocks I would suggest removing the sway bar as the brackets have a habbit of braking even with the stock shocks with lot's of articulation work. Then it's a PITA with the banging and crashing until you can find some fencing wire to tie it to the axel. I broke two brackets in 6 months with stock shocks, then decided to just remove it.

Removing it will also give you much better flex in the rear end:

Hi Jeff the shocks on the back are long travel enforcers,. they have been on scince 130k. The toyota shocks lasted 200k, but were worn out when replaced. The magums on the front are long travel but i dont know if they will help as i presume it will hit the bump stops. The mechanic had to remove the sway bar to fit the rear springs, I was tem pted to leave it off. But I do long trips to the snowy towing a boat and was worried it might effect stabilty. This is my 6th 4wd so I dont do a lot of 4wding for the sake of it any more, mainly access to fishing spots in steep terrain I have only had the new springs on 1 day but I am impressed with ride and handling, and it looks heaps better. I hope it will stop the tendancy to lift the front wheel because the toyota lsd is not up to scratch. Sals Paj has much better lsd. Every Vehicle has its compromises Its been one of the most reliable Vehicles i have owned .Was oringally purshased new in WA
Cheers and have a great day Pete

Yeah I know what you mean. Mind you the flex in the back really get's used even just going down the beech for a swim. Over a dune or whatever, it's amazing the difference it makes!

I find with the air bags, new shocks and springs, the surf handles better on the highway without the sway bar than it did stock with the sway bar.
