And even more suprising is the Toyota shocks are probally the most robust!!
The only problem with the Toyota shocks is that the travel is abmismal! I know heaps of guys with surf's who were running the stock shocks on a 10 year old + car and they were like new when removed (just like
mine were). I removed them purley for longer travel and no other reason.
I put HD 2" raised king springs in
mine, but they sag again quickly IMHO. Luckily for me I used the firestone poly airbags and that seems to prevent the sag, also stiffens her up a lot when we are loaded making highway driving much more pleasurable. If you are thinking about air bags, for a little over $100 bucks you can order the 4runner bags from www.trucksprings.com, bloody excelent I reckon.
How are the repco shocks for travel? Have you removed your sway bar?
If you have any extra travel with the repco shocks I would suggest removing the sway bar as the brackets have a habbit of braking even with the stock shocks with lot's of articulation work. Then it's a PITA with the banging and crashing until you can find some fencing wire to tie it to the axel. I broke two brackets in 6 months with stock shocks, then decided to just remove it.
Removing it will also give you much better flex in the rear end:
