Is there a sourse of information about use of HF radios while outside of Australia?
Has anyone done some overseas travel and taken along their HF?

You did mention VKS737 in your header??
The Australian National 4WD Radio Network (VKS737) are the authorised holders of the (5) frequencies for 'exclusive' use by the network and the members.
If your intention is to use the radio for contact on those channels overseas, your chances are very low (unless someone is using the channels illegally). You may have heard the Asian fishing boats on VKS channels sometimes???
I, and other people on this forum, use HF for communications other than VKS737.

This has nothing at all to do with the original question, but should be remembered by all VKS members.
Like you, I use my HF radio for communications other than the VKS radio network. While VKS737 does have 5 frequencies for their use, they are not by any means "exclusive" to them.
8022 Khz currently has 5 licensed users, 5455 Khz currently has 7 licensed users and 3995 Khz currently has 3 licensed users. In each case VKS is only one user.

There are other users with the use of these frequencies.
Please remember this when using these frequencies.

What is your line of thinking here ? If it's a trip to NZ there is a similar network availiable there. There are special channels availiable for use in a marine environment with similar networks.
If you need to chat to Australia from O/S then it's a phone, internet or get an amateur license.

Footloose, I intend to travel either in Asia or through Russia, sending ther Lancruiser there by sea container. My question is the legality and channels that are available for use overseas in the countries I will travel through. It is a matter of contacting people in those countries when there, not really talking back to Australia.

Chris, I can see your line of thought now. I have little knowledge of o/s 4wd type networks, but assume that they exist in some areas. Couple of points.
In Asia and Russia, most people use cellphones a lot. You'd need permission to have a radio there I'd assume. You'd need to join a network and have their frequencies in your set. Then you'd need to find someone that spoke english (unless you can speak their lingo of course).
It may be a tall order.

Who would want to pack a HF radio, antenna and power supply for a trip overseas and lug it around the world? Who would you talk to anyway? It would take up too much room and weight and would not leave enough room for duty free.

Not too heavy if it is in my car though.
I do intend to take the Landcruiser with me, sent ahead in a sea container.
It's called overland.

Have you thought about getting your ' basic' amateur radio license??
Then you can talk to the world (conditions permitting)....
