Hi all, have done a search but haven't found an answer yet....

I have an AGM in the cargo area of the Patrol which is charged via a Redarc in the engine bay. I would like to put a second battery under the hood as well (to run the radios and accessories off). What is the best way to hook this up? Is the simplest way just to put a second Redarc to the 2nd battery under the hood? Would a simple solinoid be the answer? To I just use the existing Redarc and have the AGM and the 2nd under bonnet battery in parallel? BTW, 2nd battery will be an Exide Extreme (getting the ARB kit for the TD42T)

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Eventually I'll be putting the AGM in the camper trailer when we get it.

yep, but was thinking I'll just extend the cable from the cargo area to the trailer to charge the AGM as it has always done, therefore still need to work out how to hook the one under the bonnet up.

isnt there a way to run a charging wire through the trailer plug to charge up that way?

trailer plug not suitable. Should use something like an andersons plug/skt arrangement.

Moggs,

I would set your dual battery system and redarc under the hood. Then parallel the third battery in the back of the car. Then when you move it to your camper trailer it is just a case of running the cables further.

I have wired my mates car with a battery in the back, we put in an 80 amp manual resettable circuit breaker the Redarc and the battery. This means you can switch it off if you have battery removed. When you put the battery in the camper trailer this will also work as an isolator. We bought the goodies from Jay-Dee auto cables in Bayswater. Drop me a line if you need the details. They have all auto electrics including heavy duty terminals etc.

Cheers

Hi Grizzle, already have the redarc set up under the bonnet to the battery box in the cargo area - has worked well for a number of years on 2 vehicles. Just not sure of the best way to put a 3rd battery into the system - was also thinking of just putting it in parallel with the AGM.

Forgot to mention but I think Affordable Batteries do a "Van Charger" kit which uses a solenoid to operate the van current

I have the dual battery system on my car (Pihrana) and have ran a cable back to the van via a resettable breaker and Anderson Plug. You are wecome to check it out if you want as I am in Lysterfield same as you.

I think they team have given the right advice so far. Install the under bonnet second battery then run a heavy cable to a trailer plug and have the camper battery in parallel. For the Ultimate setup we use a flat 12 pin trailer plug. This avoids the need for seperate anderson plugs. I now have an AGM in the camper and it works well. I have a 12 month old N70 Exide Extreme at home that I'm not using any more - your welcome to it if you need it. I now use Delkor under the bonnet.

Hi Peter, you have been a great help to me - first the cargo barrier and now the offer of a battery - I appreciate it :-)

I'd like to take you up on the offer of the N70 battery - but I insist on paying something for it!

I think I'll go down a similar path to your set up. I'll put the redarc between the starting battery and the N70 and then prallel this battery back to the AGM in the rear, and eventually the camper.

Just glad I can help. I'm in India until the 12th Sept but you can pick the battery up from home if you need it before then. I had it on charge a few weeks ago and held up OK. If after 12th is Ok give me a call and we'll arrange a time to catch up. I'd like to have a look at the wagon in any case - thinking of changing to a 4.2 myself. As for payment - nah don't worry - good to see it being used.

Hi Peter, after the 12th is fine. I'll give you a call then to arrange a time to pick it up and have a squiz at the wagon...we'll sort out an appropriate level of compensation for the battery... hope you have a great time in India.

Gday Moggs

These can get like tyre threads! Personally, I would go with the simple solenoid and heavy cable to your starter, and keep the smart one for the rear battery/camper trailer. From your rig profile it looks like you have an electric winch. The simple solenoid will allow the 2 under bonnet jobbies to be in paralell when winching, halving the load on each. I think (but may stand corrected) that the smart solenoid will disconnect during winching.

I have 2 exide extremes under the bonnet set up in this way, and the 3rd in the cargo area is in a portable box that I have a lead that plugs into one of the waeco type plugs in the back for charging and supplying the circuits with extra power for the fridge etc. The only problem I may have with this is when starting/winching, the power being fed back through this lead may blow a fuse. I haven't come across this problem yet, but would unplug it when winching as a precaution.

envious of your rig

Hi Andrew, rig is getting there - almost finished...if you can ever say that LOL! Thought I had made up my mind...but what you have said makes sense to me - was actually my initial thoughts re: setting it up. I also think that the Redarc would quickly disconnect during winching. Have winched from the starter battery with the Redarc hooked up to the AGM without a problem previously. I think that the redarc provides spike protection, so should not be an issue.

I see from your rig pic you have a young daughter - I have two daughters, 6 & 2. They love camping at the moment, but I am dreading the day when they say "not camping again...its too dirty and there are bugs" LOL, I am sure it will happen one day!

Gday Moggs

Yeah the daughter is 3.5 at the moment and loves 4wding and camping, and I also have a 16 month old son who is getting there. Camping is not quite as relaxing as it used to be, but will be better next dry when the young bloke is a bit more self sufficient. So far I've had a good run with the battery set up. It runs an 80l waeco for 48 hrs no problems, although we keep opening to a minimum with beer in an esky usually for the first day or so.

I am looking at the trailer/camper trailer option more closely at the moment, as I am generally banished to the tent with the kids as they stress a bit if they wake up not knowing where they are, while mum gets the luxury of the rooftop camper by herself.

Cheers Andrew
