I always thought it was Cooper Pedy till I was there two weeks ago and bugger me it is
Coober Pedy. My old mum (Late 70's) thought it was Cooper as
well. Just goes to show or has this place been renamed as
well????????

Just dug up the following:
"The town was officially named by the local Progress and Mining Association in 1922. The most widely accepted translation of the Aboriginal name is that 'coober' means either boy, uninitiated man or white man (all of which may
well be interchangeable) and 'pedy' means hole or
rock hole. Thus
Coober Pedy is a description of what the local Aborigines regarded as peculiar activities (both mining and living underground) and so the town means 'white men down holes'. "

It's definetely
Coober Pedy. And
Marree has 2 r's, a fact which the
Adelaide Advertiser (also known as the Crow-vertiser) can't seem to get right.
