I am the happy owner of a 1990 GU 4.5lt Patrol, it has just clicked over 100,000km. The other day the starter motor failed and the NRMA was called, the technician tried the usual stuff including jumping the battery and checking the earth etc. He also attempted to turn the motor over using a socket and large bar on the front drive pulley. The patrol was eventually towed and the starter motor brushes replaced. When I went to change the oil today I noticed an oil leak around the front pulley, not sure how long has its been looking but it looks fairly fresh. My questions are: could the NRMA have caused the problem trying to turn the motor over by the front pulley? If not is this a common problem for the model and age? Finally could anyone recommend a workshop in Newcastle that could attend to this problem? Please be gentle it’s my first post. Thanks for any help.

Hi TI-4500,

Not at all likely that turning the motor over manually caused the leak, more likely that having a cause to go looking resulted in finding something you would have found in the next few days/weeks anyway.

Can't suggest a mechanic but would suggest if it's a 1990 it's a GQ. But given it's a 4500 I'm suggesting your year is a typo.

Good luck

Dave
