Hi Maurie

Had my turbo upgraded and 3" exhaust fitted all at once at United Fuel Injection in Redcliffe (out near the domestic airport) in Perth. Made a big difference to the way it drives. Hard to tell if the economy improved, but I'm sure it has just no hard proof.

I found it worthwhile!
Cheers

Hi Wayne i have just returned from broome towing a 17'6" Coramal full size offroad van 4.1 Klms to Litre and very slow on overtaking at 95ks an hour ,did United give you a dyno readout b4 and after you had the upgrade (i asume they recalibrated the injection pump) Whats your thoughts on dieselgas conversion

Crayman1 this might sound silly but try driving another 4.2 with 3" exhaust, it
maybe your engine. or your pump needs twigging

SA Patrol Did try that side by side with identical vechicle, mine a tad in front of other vechicle, had a gq 4.2td kept it for 6 months after purchased gu considerably more power out of gq??, not sure if i should go with upgrading OME turbo or bite bullet and go 4 replacement alternative turbo from scwitzer or other

G'day Mauri,
1.) the GQ probably had a lower final drive (4.1) than the GU (3.9), so the GQ may have felt more powerful....Other contributing factors are that GQ's turbo would have been a bit bigger and the GU is a heavier truck.
2.) I have fitted the Denco turbo upgrade, which involves fitting a Schwitzer replacement turbo (saw the 2 turbos side by side on the work bench......BIG differnce). I am very happy with the result and can recommend it.

I have no financial or other interest in Denco; they just do bloody good work!!!.

Cheers

Soooo, i take it that the venerable 4.2 may not have quite as much poke as most people would like??????
I ask as we are looking at a new one and are wondering about economy and power from the 4.2 v's the 3L.

Rick,

The td42 has much taller gearing compared to the 3L, that is why people complain about power, it is a lazy old technology diesel that doesn't rev, for that reason the manufacturer can't put lower gearing, at 3000rpm is already screaming...
UNlike the 3.0L which loves revving and keeps happy, the 4.2 just lugs...
I have owned mine in STD form for 6 years and 230.000kms without trouble and when we go out with friends who have the 3L model, the smaller engine eats it on the highway, but off road the 4.2 shines because off roading you need that lazy grunt rather than speed.
We live in hilly country though. On flat coutnry the 3L would probably be a better bet.
What I don't understand is why people buy it and then go modifying it to get more and more power (didn't they test drive it)???
The factory does not tune it for more power because it was not designed for more power, the cast iron head cannot get rid of the heat fast enough....

they go modifying it to get th same performance as the 3.0l. But in saying that an exhaust and tune makes a big difference and is well worth the $$

Maurie, you have an intercooled one as I have and reading what I can I believe the pump has some electronic monitoring of fuel useage for emissions purposes and not sure who is best equipped to handle it. The older pumps were relatively easy to trick up. The intercooler I believe doen't do a lot in comparison to that should be expected and some have said suits the purposes of emissions rather than anything else. Advancing the pump was easy too and really positive.

I guess when you talk about drop pipe, you mean the dump pipe?

Gday guys
A friend of mine just bought an 03 model, and took the safari kit of his old gq and on the gu it went, he found a butterfly valve just before the intercooler, and wasnt sure what it would be, i suggested it might work with the EGR...but anyway, back to the point...he noticed a difference in lag time, but more midrange to high range power with the safari, the factory turbo is too small and ive heard it can overheat the motor from being too much of a restriction to getting heat out the engine if used at high speed.
So that is an option (safari turbo)that i would consider along with the others...

Well...i recon you should do some homework before you fork out the big dollars.
Personally, I would look into the gas setup. It really does look good on paper. For the amount of dollars you will pay to geta little better power from ur 4.2 by fitting a bigger turbo, I would test drive one that has the gas fitted.

I am seriously considering adding the gas to mine. From what ive read, its around 20% power increase. 20% increase is not an easy thing to get out of a 4.2 with turbo fitted. For the cost of around 3500 bucks, considering the NSW gov will refund me 2000 for fitting gas, i can get approx 20% power increase for around 1500 bucks. Thast pretty cheap. Not to mention the cleaner burn i get which in turn will keep oil cleaner too. It all adds up to cleaner engine and that in itself is a bonus if you intend to keep ur 4b fora long time.

My GQ runs a denco turbo, I run mine with a 7 pound boost ONLY, It works fine for me, but id like to try it at 10 pounds boost before i decide to purchase the gas setup. I will be road testing one before i decide if its worth it. But from what i have read, It sure sounds good.

So think hard before you spend ur money, the idea of adding a "bigger" turbo sounds good, but it wont improve ur car as much as you may think it will.

Maurie,
If you decide to fit the gas, they have to recalibrate the pump again. So unless u need ur truck to have the extra power now, id wait and save myself 1650 bucks.

The price I got from them, was much more than this.. :(

The killer was the price I got on gauges from them Via this site, was more than their Ebay deals.. Quite disappointing.

What John was talkin about was sending your snail away, and get the internals changed - more power, lower EGT's, and much cheaper.

Im still working on different options myself still..
