Hi,
I have a gu patrol and it had an aftermarket turbo timer in it and the sub tank light continued to stay on, after reading a few messages on this website and asking a few question i have decided to take the timer out.

But here is my problem with no turbo timer the sub tank light still comes up and i can not get it to go out or transfer fuel. I have disconnected the battery and can get it to go away for about 30 seconds after starting then it comes back again.

Any information would be great thanks

Regards, Kayne

kayno,
it sounds like the same situation that friend had with his toyota which had a sub tank . if the vehicle has not had the tanks used regularly ie swapping from main tank and sub tank and using same ,the solynoid (spelling who cares) could stick probably because lack of use of the 2nd tank. have a look at the conections .

hope i have been some help

Lewjack1,

Anything is worth a try at the moment, i will get under there and take a look. You could be onto something as i havent used the tanks for a while because of the fault.

GU doesn't have a solenoid like the cruisers.....it just has a little electric pump.

My suggestion is to get underneath, remove the 10mm bolts of the protective cover, disconnect the plug lead that supplies power to the pump, and hook up a pair of aligator clipped leads from a battery directly to the pump to see if it starts up.

If it does, it probably means you have an earthing problem.....need to add a decent size earth strap from chassis to body.

Read through the threads and you will find this is common. The answer is to have an earth wire from the body to the chassis. Something to do with the earth getting to the pump via the body mounts. I had the same problem, installed an earth and never seen that problem again!

My earth wire is basically a length of wire with two eye type fittings crimped on the ends. One is placed under a nut under the bonnet and the other under a nut just behind the bull bar.

About $2 worth of materials.

Cheers

Every time a GU patrol is started the sub tank pump transfers a small amount of fuel to the main tank so if you had the sub with some fuel in it most of the time it would not be caused through lack of use. I would try the earth.

Hay Patrolben, i understand what you say about it transfers fuel on start up, but if the sub tank light is on then it is unable to transfer fuel as it is in a fault mode and the sub tank transfer button doesent hold on to transfer fuel.

Hi Kayno,

Here's where I run the extra earth. LHS chassis rail to body, below front door.

Hi Kayno, after I fitted a long range fuel tank to our patrol ute had same problem, it also happens now IF when i fill sub tank fuel goes down the breather pipe.
After a long and meaningful 30 second discussion with Nissan I was informed to disconnect batter for about 1 minute and reconnect it then resets the so called computer..... guess what it works ;-)

Kayno,

I have had similar problems with mine over time, since adding the accessories. I had to "re earth" the electrical system by connecting another earth strap. The dealer who put in the extra earth strapping is going to re do the stapping at the next service.
However in the meantime (I've seen it done twice) all they do is reset the Sub Tank Module. If you reach in behind the console (below the radio) from the front passenger side, between the air con outlet and the centre console you will find a small white plastic box marked "diesel". Carefully pull it out, disconnect for 30 secs, re connect and the light should go off.
Primarily it must be an earthing problem you are experiencing.

Let us know how you go.

Hi Mick,
Well i found that little white box and disconnected it and the fault sub tank light still was there. That box if disconnected and left out of the system basically takes the sub tank out of the car. I have put 3 earth cables on the ute 2 from the cab to chassy and on from the motor to the chassy, run a multimeter over them all and got a good reading.
So now i am lost again. i am going to disconnect the transfer pump and the sender and that white box and try and fault find the system to see if there is anything else in the system.

Thanks for you information though i wouldnt have known that was there.

Kayne,

Have you followed my above suggestion to disconnect the pump (under the car where the plug is located) and just use 2 aligator-clip wires to check if the pump still functions. You'll need to have a battery or power pack or even a 12v battery charger under there with you. Simply touching the probes/clips to the motor plug prongs will soon tell you if the pump is stuffed.

Had this problem recently. Make sure you have a "good" earth, engine, chassis and body. It will solve a lot of other problems too. Use a reasonably heavy cable.
