Gidday
MY father-in-law gave me a bit of old fishing gear a while ago. Had a look through it again last night and came across some small hooks (like garfish hooks), but there is no eye.
Where the eye should be is a flat piece, I think its called a spade.
Does anyonr know how to tie 'em?
Thought I'd try our
forum before I looked for a fishing
forum.
Thanks Bob

Hi Boo, my old man used to be great at tying them when he was around, but I havnt been able to master it myself. There is a small paper back book called knots and rigs, you should find the tying pattern in that, see how you go anyway, cheers.

Hey Boo Boo, it's called 'snelling' a hook and if you Google "snelling hooks", you'll get a bucketload of info!! Snelling is a common method of tying hooks to both eyed and eyeless hooks. I use it a lot. Another term used is 'snood'.
Cheers

Yep, I can tie the bloody things! Now I'll qualify, I cant tie them to a main line, only to a leader which you then attatch to swivel etc: or snood onto a main line. Don't ask me to explain the technique or you will wind up to three left and two right hands.
The best way to learn is to visit a bookshop and look through the appropriate books till you find one which explains the technique, after you have memorised same put the book back on the shelf, go home and chuck the hooks in the bin.
I must admit that I was extremely chuffed to finally get the technique down pat after an old fisho gave me two boxes of long shank flathead hooks.
After using some and misplacing the others I've never used it since and would be surprised if you could still buy the damned things, this begs the obvious question. Even if you could buy them, why would you bother? I know that I have never gone looking for them in tackle stores.
I'm now of the opinion it's one of those things you would do only because you can and for no other reason. Sort of like "Why does a dog lick his balls? Answere. "Because he can".
Ian
P.S.
I think I may have somewhere an illustrated instruction for the above, if you really can't sleep at night give me a M.M. and I'll see if I can dig it up for you.

Hi Boo Boo, Those hooks are probaly older than me, so keep them as a keepsake. Chemically Sharpen hooks today are sooo much sharper then what we used 40 years ago. Back then if they would stick into your skin that was sharp enough, today if they do not dig straight into your fingernail they are not sharp enough. God only knows how we managed to catch fish then,
Cheers Pete

Hi Bob,
Actually the snood knots are good because they keep the hook in the same line as the leader. Sometimes when you tie onto the eye of a hook they will sit at odd angles rather than straight. Also they are used to provide a sliding hook further up the line so you can use say livebaits of different sizes without a problem. They aren't that hard once you get the hang of them :). There are a number of fishing sites that have diagrams and even moving drawings to get the right idea.
Tim.

No mate! She's got to the stage where she just ignores me, unless of course it's the night to put out the wheely
bins.
