check out cost of fitting turbo V cost of fitting a V6. would be a lot simpler fitting turbo also, as compared to fitting motor...which will require mounts, exhaust etc etc and gearbox adaptor

You can get amazing power out of that engine cheaply.
However its not much good for 4wding.
Right jetting and change in advance curve done properly on dyno saw
mine
go from 100kw to peak 140+kw.
Seems I lot I know , but there was an issue with them in the way they were detuned on second barrel to make them better 4wd.
After rapidly burning out the clutch , I detuned
mine by converitng it to fuel injection
which gave more even power flow but only 115kw.
V6 commodore is best engine solution for that car but some have done V8 and transmission change , although slipping in its generic mate, a Vl turbo 3lt is an easier path.

Gday Darren
I remember an article in a 4wd mag years ago that had a bloke with a 3lt GQ that did a few mods. He worked for a mob that did up riceburners, and one of the photo's in the article showed the Patrol smoking them up on tarmac! The 3.0 petrol is aparently one of the best engines made for doing mods to, and remains pretty reliable. Sorry I can't remember which mag, but they definetly got some go out of it!
Cheers Andrew

May have been a motor out of a VL, same nissan motor though. Think it was red.....I can just remember the amount of smoke it produced (from the tyres, I produce smoke from somewhere else!)

Your motor is an RB30 - same motor as they put into the R31 Skyline and VL Commodore, except Nissan unfortunately detuned it with a carby for the Patrol. My son's into R31 Skylines and they make them fly.
Theres plenty of
places out there that can make this motor fly - I would expect that you'd need to convert it to fuel injection sooner rather than later, but I don't know how complicated this would be.

Do a search of the archives. Some good info already been given. To keep it standard and ultra reliable - do the carby (use somebody who knows them - as nissan put a few useless items in to slow down the airflow and to smooth out deceleration), have the head done, and distributor and vacuum advance refurbished. Add a
snorkel for some better and colder air flow. Run it on 98 octane ULP Then use the revs - this is a high revving motor and will use less fuel in hilly country in 4th rather than 5th gear. It is happy revving to 5000 rpm plus and will not die on you because you do it. Most do 450000 klms if properly serviced without doing rings and big ends. Head will need new valves once or twice though. I have one and it flies stock standard with just those things done. It is probably the cheapest most capable and if correctly maintained most reliable 4wd you can get for the dollars and you dont need to worry if you scratch it.
A very misunderstood vehicle because of the small motor and most peoples aversion to revving a motor beyond 3500 rpm. Will use between 15-21 lit/100 km.

I also notice you have 33" A/Ts these will put your speedo and your gearing on this vehicle out by - 10 % approx - this means that 4th gear (with 33s) will be just slightly lower than the original 5th gear (with 31s which were standard). I personally wouldnt bother much with 5th gear unless just cruising on flat roads as this motor was pretty spot on with 31s. This wouldnt help the sluggishness. (fuel consumption will also be better by using 4th gear as this is closer gearing to the original spec.)
Also check your tyre pressures they will make the vehicle sluggish if pushing a flat area on the tyre. If you can run the front at 36psi or more and the rear 37 or more up to about 44psi if heavily laiden. You will just have to experiment with the bigger tyres and the ideal pressure. Remember this is the lightest GQ on the road especially on the front tyres. (light motor, gearbox and you have a very light bullbar.)
cheers

Contact Russell Guest of Guest 4wd in
