I have a 88 GQ Petrol Carby with a recently fitted snorkel from O/L. They only fitted the snorkel, didnt seal it in any way. So I have since blocked the manifold stove air intake in the snorkel, the vaccum accuator has been removed and blocked and sealed any other bad joins etc. I cannot see any area air can come in. Once I cover the snorkel with two plastics bags, the motor runs ordinally but wont stall. Should the engine stall? Is there air getting in anywhere else that I cannot see?
The engine compression has been checked and is perfect. Help! I dont want to risk have a submarine at the next deep river crossing...

YES,
You have an air leak. Any engine will stall if you cover the intake, same as a human would die if u covered its mouth and nose.

Your lucky you decided to do that before you crossed a deep river, it could have been a very expensive weekend for you.

Chances are its leaking from where the snorkel enters the guard at the connection point OR possibly the flex hose that hooks up to ur air box, that usually isnt a true seal anyway. Hope ya find the leak.

Get a can of "Aero Start" and spray it round all the joint in the induction system with the engine running and the top of the snorkle covered, The engine will rev up a bit when the "Aero Start" enters thru the leak

I doubt whether the engine will stall.
You still have the breather hose and the pcv hose feeding air from the crankcase.

Try blocking it off closer to the engine to see if it will stall. (Just a thought!)

Must go through this exercise myself one day as I know the seal where my snorkle enters the inner guard is less than desirable. (Foam ring)

I fitted my own snorkel and yes it will stall if I cover the top. However mine is a diesel with no other air inlet options. The PCV in mine runs through an oil catch can.

The PCV is only a small pipe from the crank case, I would be very suprised if it would run with air through that alone.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I have checked high and low for air leaks with no luck. With the snorkel blocked, the engine struggles to idle, runs rough but still no stall. Cannot hear any air spots either. It is sucking so hard on the bags via the snorkel but still runs.
Does any one have the same car and does your stall?
