G'day All

Just a quick question, do you need to increase the length of the panhard rod when doing a 2inch suspension lift on a GU Patrol? I have put the new springs and shocks in, disconnected the panhard rod to get the rear axle to drop down far enough like the manual said, and now it seems that it is not long enough to be connected back up, help please.

Thanks in Advance

Snowy,
No you don't, once you go past 3" yes.
Never had to disconnect the panhard bar yet!

Disconnect shockers and stabiliser bar and the springs fall out .

Put it down to inexperience then, but is there a way I can connect it back up when there is about a 40 mm gap between hole centres without disconnecting shocks and removing the springs?

Try a big lever to move diff across. like about 4' of pipe!

Both vertical and horizontal leading to a diagonal gap or 45mm.

Hi Snowy

Don't remember saying to disconnect panhard , when you posed question 37185.

I just had a re-read of it and I note some of other replies !

Anyway , as per follow your follow ups if lever can't do it or you can't safely apply
pressure to put it back in line then I think your better to take shocks etc back out
and restart as it could be risky applying pressure with Hi -lift etc under car.

Possible that new springs are also longer than expected till they settle.

No you didn't, but the Gregory's Manual did, and I usually place a lot of faith in them. Anyway with a bit of grunting and straining, I managed to get it back in and bolted up, thanks everyone for their help.

Kind Regards

FWIW Snowy, the Gregorys manual for GQ has wrong diff capacities.. so they arent that good.

Hay Snowy,
I have just replaced a busted panhard rod and yes I had the same problem of getting it back. Basically the weight of the vehicle needs to be down on the ground (to compress the springs) and you need to push the body sideways to get it on. Not fun by yourself. I did it pushing with my feet while lying on my back and had my 9 year old son pushing the other side. 150 km south of Carnarvon lying in the mud on the side of a beach track.

With the panhard off, there is a lot of flex in the trailing arm bushes so the weight of the vehicle tends to push across to one side and you need to push it back.

Have fun.

My Patrol has got 5" springs on the rear end and it doesn't have an extended Panhard.......and the wheels are still "centrally" located when looked at from the rear.

5" lift, I am suprised that it doesn't need a longer Panhard, but that is good if it doesn't.
Far better not tho have an adjustable one if you can, as that is another weak link and thats what broke on mine. I have also heard of several others with Lovels platinum panhard rods that busted on long outback trips. Not fun to repair in the bush.

Snowy,
I had a 2" lift done to mine and noticed the rear wheels were off centre by about 40mm. OME springs and shocks, 50mm lift, actual at the rear was 80mm!
I had an adjustable panhard rod fitted and problem solved.
I have read what others have said but I feel comfortable with the adjustable rod.
