G'day out there.
I hv a 05 GU IV 4.2 dx manual. It was delivered with Dunlop SP Road Grippers, 7.50 x R16 on standard split steel rims. So far I have done 35000 km, about 70 pct on the blacktop (rest
Gibb River rd, Tanamai Track, Wilpena area etc). I dont do any bush bashing or real serious rock crawling etc. Of the 70k on the blacktop, about 6000 km has been towing a big boat (3000 kgs incl trailer). The rear tyres are already down to about 3 mm, and the fronts are down to about 8 mm. I am a bit disapointed in the wear on the rears - I wud hv thought I wud get a bit more milage.
Most of the next year or so, mileage and roads will be similar - 70/30 on/off road, and about 5000 ks towing the boat.
What do you recommend as replacements that will give better mileage.
Cheers

Thanks. I know its late for rotation (and also that I could rotate on a 5 Tyre basis), but this deliberate lateness is also part of my testing regime to see how the wear went, aspec when towing the boat. I was toying with the idea of putting on the (still brand new spare) and buying 1 new Dunlop RG the rear, but I dont think i will do this just now. I am heading off on another long (4000 km) boat tow soon, so I will see whow I go. Do you have any ideas on replacements, given my usage pattern ?
Cheers.

As per Truckster - how come such a front/rear difference Lambo.
Sounds like they are 1/2 worn on average which isn't to bad.
I can reccomend the 235/85/16 Toyo Opats which are same fittment but wider tread. Your also better to go with 16X7 rims.
Haven't quite killed
mine yet and they have done 80,000 of the 120,000 I have clocked in gU 4800 patrol.
Buy your next set of tyres now and leave in sun for few months if
you want max mileage only.

Tks Robin. I will be doing the rotation this w/e. I think the main reason for the front/rear diff is the Boat towing - its a big lady...

I guess you've worked out that a lot of weight on the rear end wears out the rear tyres. Heat builds up in the tyres, and causes them to wear quick.
You've done pretty
well for 750's on splits. If you want better, you'll need to move to tubeless tyres on different rims.

Lambo,
the 750R16 wear a bit quicker because they are relatively skinny, and they are tubed - the tube creates friction, and also limits heat dissipation, so the tyre heats up more readily and gets less mileage.
Common move is to go tubeless - 16x7 size rims will suit 265/75R16 - this is a very common size and same diameter as your 750's.
If you want taller tyres, like 285/75R16 you'll need 16x8 rims.
Depending on the tyre you buy, you'll get greater mileage, but you'll also use a bit more fuel - theres always a catch.
