Has anyone done this track? Can you give me some idea of difficulty? Would it be OK to tow an off road camper? I know it is one way. What's to see and/or do there?

Hi Twinkles

Done it several times , probably will again in a few weeks, as I am planning
a non-stop circumnavigation of it.

There is always a couple of bigger dunes that need a bit of power.

Don't know your car, but expect you could do it with trailer as
there are bypass sections on the bigger dunes but its becoming
a sensitive track subject to frequent closure for any excuse
including excessive track damage.

Like many sandy tracks the conditions vary a lot, if you could
aviod using a trailer it would be better.
We have winched a couple of stuck car/trailer combo's there
usually those that didn't let tyres right down though.

Its now always closed from nov over summer.

Not much to see down there , we go more for the drive.

You can see do more on Vic side of border at big dessert state forest
camping at Big Billy or broken bucket , and there are good place
to check out how you go in sand to.

Yeah its an easy drive except for three or four dunes at the southern end which can give you some strife. As Robin has mentioned there are some bypass tracks around them but this remains a contentious issue. I had to use one as I was down to 15psi on cheesecutters and the sand on one dune was extremely soft in the middle of the day. After the thrid attempt I opted for thje side track. This was driving an old G60 Datto without a traler.

How heavy is your camper trailer and what are you towing it with? Tyre pressures remain the key to any sand excursions. In heavy sand I run 15psi on the GQ and 10psi on my bush trailer(not camper, so much lighter)

Some open sedge lands and good Mallee country are there to be enjoyed. Get a map from Dept Environment and Heritage SA, which will give you all the side tracks and things to see along the way.

Enjoy

Havent been for a couple of years, but if they keep making the "track" into a fire break with a grader and bypassing the sand hills, as they were doing last time i was there, you will be able to do it in the commodore !
Have a good trip.

Cheers pesty

I drive a turbo Hilux and the trailer weighs about 700kg. Should I put my second set of wheels with Procomp muddies or use the all terrains?

There was a working bee at Ngarkat CP recently - July School Hols - did anyone go?

I understood that one of the efforts involved fencing off some diversions and taming a few others as the only ones allowed.

Anyone have any more information?

If it's raining out there at the moment it could make it interesting - or if the ranger thinks it might be too interesting, it could make it very boring (looking at the "closed" sign).

Ciao for now
Andrew.

Prior to visiting this area do yourself a favour and get your hands on a brilliant book about the area, history, geology etc. and 19 4WD tracks in detail. Book is called Mallee Tracks by Nickolls & Angel ISBN 0 646 42023 2. Your local Australian motoring organisation should have it or be able toi get you a copy.
