Hello

I am almost ready to buy a Rhino Rack luggage rack for our GU3 Patrol.

The supplier is suggesting that we get a 2100x1200 rack with a 4 bar kit.

What do other people have?

I see on the RhinoRack website that there is also a 2000x1200 with a 3 bar kit. This would seem to be a more economical way of doing it. The 4 bar kit certainly makes this an expensive exercise.

The plan is just to put the tent, tent poles, tarp etc up there. We had an alloy rack on our GQ and that's all we had up there - not too heavy!! I would also like the flexibility to be able to put a spare wheel up there as well, so that's why I am thinking about the longer racks.

Thanks in anticipation

Noel

Noel, I don't necessarily want to discourage you but remember the more weight you have up top, the less stable your vehicle is. Lifting a wheel up to the top is no mean feat either. Spare tyre is different to a wheel and tyre.

Some manufacturers have maximum mass up top, so be aware that there may be a reccomendation to you too. I did hear about a vehicle where cracks developed the frames at the top of the windows :-( A few years back though

Have had experience with 2 Patrols with full length roof racks and cracks in the pillars. Generally only a spare wheel on the roof, occasionally an Igloo icebox too.
Possibly the roof rack stopped the body from flexing marginally, but 2 different model patrols and both cracked in the same places.
I would go for 3 bars for the Rhino Rack. They would take the weight envisaged I feel. 4 bars might create the same problem a full length rack possibly would with the flexing.
I am no engineer though.

Noel

I stumbled across tradesmans roof racks and the put three of them and a large Rhino basket on top of my troopy. Its a good solid set up. I only secure the basket to the front and back rack, however I will do the middle one as well because the basket and middle rack vibrate a bit and make a noise when travelling empty.
