No......I wouldn't say that.
One example is..........You may've be influenced by the males around you?
No matter what......each to their own.

There are so many of you that seem to know each other and be great friends even though some of you live in different states.

i am hoping that thru our travels around Australia we too will find these friendships.

Happy travelling

Hi Jen

Yes, some people are like extended families on here. If you notice (unless you're new to EO) when people get to know you from posting on here and they find out that are going to be in their state they will usually say, let's know so we can catch up with you. I hope when you come to S.A oneday, we can catch up too!

For your information.......
It's best if you don't post your email addy on here as I'm told scammers/scanners collect them. Although a few people on here have disguise them by breaking up the text. (for example........jen 24 at big pond dot com dot au - people know that it all belongs together) It can also help if you're a member then you can send member messages and get friendly that way.

Hi Jen

Forgot to say, another good way to meet anyone from here is to check out your states or any ohters on the Trips/Gathering page under the Members logo at the top of the page.
You don't have to be a member to go to them either!

Mine is a car ;-)

I don't think there'd be too many who have driven a real truck that would call a 4by a truck

In the days before I owned a 4wd I used to walk my pre-school aged daughter through car parks pointing out 4wds to her and saying "nice car" this was in an effort to solicit her support for my campeign to purchase such a vehicle. Her mother (SWMBO) argued that they were trucks. I went to great lengths to convince the minister for finance that my dream vehicle was a very nice, comfortable car with the ability to take us to those special out of the way places.

Mine always has been and always will be a car.

I refer to mine in female terms eg

1. Like a female when she's all polished up and shiny 'she's good looking'

2. 'Old girl' - when refering to her age (it's a 91 80 series)

3. Cantankerous old b***h - whe she plays up

4. Stubborn b***h - when she wont do what I want

and many more endearing terms :-)

I call mine a truck

It isn't a car
It isn't a car type station wagon
It has a very rugged chassis
It has a truck gearbox
It has a truck engine.
It has lots of car comforts

Yeah, truck is a bit of an Americanism, but I like it. At least it is better than SUV!!

Sometimes our 'TRUCKS' go up to the 4.5ton limit.....LOL

What Willem said............................exactly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've always referred to my Patrols as trucks. Occasionally I have to drive a company Falcon. Now THAT, my friends, is a bloody "CAR". I never feel so insecure and not-in-control as when I'm behind the wheel of that low-slung POS.

In the Patrol I sit up higher (for a better view of the road). It is S L O W (compared with the auto Falcon, which I seem to always spin the wheels when I take off, cos I'm so used to having to use liberal amounts of right boot to stir the old 'trol into something vaguely resembling "life"). It smells like a truck (gotta love that pong of diesel smoke). I can crawl underneath it to inspect it's undercarriage (can't do that with a bloody "CAR").

Maybe it IS an ego trip thing. There are just sooooo many differences between the Patrol and a sedan, that I can't see myself ever referring to it as a car.

I recently bought another 4by, a 1995 Daihatsu Feroza 4x4. It's small compared to the Patrol....I call it a car.

At the end of the day, does it really matter??? I shelled-out the hard-earned reddies for the bloody thing......so I'll call it whatever I like. If you buy a Kenworth and wanna call it a "Panzy-mobile", there ain't no way I'm gunna critisize you; you spend the $280K on something, you buy the right to call it whatever you reckon sounds good to ......YOU.

I don't think it's American at all... We ALWAYS used to call the landcruisers truck's in the early 80's as kids in Marble Bar. We dind't have much of a yankie influence up there I can tell you!

Of course the old Landcruisers were trucks I suppose with leaf springs front and back, no carpet to be seen, gear sticks that had as much throw as a javalin and noise that'd make your ears bleed, but the term is still here.

Personally mine is called the "oldgirl" or "the surf" most of the time, but I have no problems with the term "truck".

Truck is probally used more for it's agricultral toughness than for the relationship to size IMHO. Of course not many 4bies can claim that tougness anymore, but if you've modd'd it sufficiantly to make it "tough", why the hell not call it a truck??

Hi Hairy

Some good answers, Roachie could call his a truck as its well over 4.5 ton hahahahaaha
I have 2 4wd's so i call the traytop "the truck", and the wagon "the cruiser" even though they are both cruisers.
BUT now im in trouble because I bought a truck , yes over 4.5 ton LOL a couple weeks ago so will have to rethink all the names.
I guess to those who have come up from a mini to a 4by , they seem like trucks !

Cheers Pesty

When i'm allowed to drive it then it's a car/SWagon.

When I suggest she drive my bus (6.5tonne) she baulks at it saying its too big.
So much for her truck.

IMHO Patrols.... particularly GQ's.... don't drive like "cars"... at least mine doesn't anyway, we drove a GQ and a GU petrol ST before buying a diesel, THEY drove like cars, the diesel live axle sounds like a truck, drives like a truck, so we caved in a call it a Truck!

Cheers

where do you draw the line ?

Ute,Suv,Wagon,RV,PickUp,Stepside,TrayTop ...

It does have to have a loading bed/tray ? right ?
It does have to have more than ? weight ??

with 5T GVW you need a truck license to tow a trailer .. is that a truck then ?

A canopy turns a truck into a mobile home ?

A mobile home is a truck because it has DRW ?

I guess it's just that marketing people come up with new terms all the time
to position a product outside the square ? or do you feel more important when you drive a truck rather than a wagon ?

interesting question anyway ..

I call mine a truck because it has DRW (referred to as a J-Lo bottom by some), a 2.4 m bed for loading and a GVW greater than 4.5T. It is 4wd or should I say 6WD but I always would refer to it as a truck.
