Another battery question for the experts. Have been through the archives and was after a bit more info, Iam getting a winch fitted tomorrow and my main battery is the factory one that came with the car so it is about 4.5 years old and with the navara you have to run the winch of the main battery as the other is only a 50ah deep cycle so what I am after is info on what type of good quality main battery to use.
thanks

FWIW.... I've been studying batteries myself, this is what I've found so far:
A typical car battery is designed to deliver a lot of charge in a short time - that is, to start your car. They don't like to be run down a long way though.
Deep cycle batteries are designed to be drawn down over a longer time, at a lower amperage. These can be discharged to a much lower level. They are ideal for things like fridges etc.
Your winch is going to need a lot of grunt over a short period of time, so you would need the 'starter' type of battery. This can be linked to the main battery using an isolator such as a Redarc etc (
http://www.exploroz.com/vehicle/electrics/batteries.asp which is a 'smart' solenoid.
These cut off the main battery when it falls to a certain voltage (leaving you with a functional main battery), and on the recharge cycle, doesn't kick in recharging the second battery until the main is up to it's full charge.
HTH!
Cheers, Max

"doesn't kick in recharging the second battery until the main is up to it's full charge."
- no, that's a myth. They start charging the second battery when the first reaches 13.6 volts - that's more likely to happen when the Main is at 20% charge.

Hi
Ross
Have reccomended the Exide Orbital for that application.
It has the better spiral wound plates , and excels in every test, and is a true
combined AGM battery.
There are other brand names as
well, like Optima.
Only use 1 battery in my Patrol and powers the 9500lb winch quite
well
but I do keep engine running on a hi idle when using it.

Thanks robin
I was leaning towards the orbital. What colour have you got and if you dont mind me asking how much did you pay for yours.

Hi
Ross
got the standard size 48ah blue one here - I believe there is ,or at least was only one colour (MINES 2 YRS OLD) - DAMM hit capslock key again.
Optima's are dearer and certainly have colours which reflect slight internal design differences to optimize them for given application.
Orbital is only one type -as of my last check.
$280 - but suspect they may be cheaper now.
Its type of design means that at 48AH it has around 2-3 times the usable capacity of the normal 70ah battery the car came with. There is a bigger one though.

Hi Robin,
I take it your Nissan missed out on the Backspace key!
A pity the engineers didn't know how to fix their mistakes.
;-)
Ciao for now
Andrew.

A normal starting battery is designed to supply a lot of current for a VERY short time - 10 seconds. Winching is a totally different need.
You can now get batteries that can provide high currents AND be discharged down to 20% remaining - AGM batteries.
Make sure you find an AGM that has a high cranking current rating - ALL AGM's have better deep discharge capabilities compared with starting-type wetcells.

I am interested in replying to your question in regards to CCA ratings
All our red top C series batteries that I supply all have CCA ratings
They have the ability to cycle approx 650 cycles at 50% degree of discharge
and are commonly referred to as a Hybrid battery
If you require more technical information on our products please go to www.absorbed power.com

Hi
Ross,
Where are you based ?
Why not pop in and see me and I will show you what is best suited to your needs.
Our AGM range will do both accessories and winching. The Supercharge range of MRV70 batteries have 105 amp hours and are in a standard N70 case size. There is also the Supercharge 'GOLD' more suited to cranking and winching but is a good all-rounder. If you are not close to me try K-mart or call 1300 BATTERY.
Look for this label if you go to K-mart.
Regards Derek.

Just a Quick bit of positive feedback Derek: you are in a difficult situation giving your expert advice, but not crossing the line (IMO) with the promotion of your own business. This is a good example, recomend a product that you sell, and gave a photo of what it looked like and where else you could buy it. Generally we are pretty quick to jump on someone, so I thought a +ve may be a nice change...
Cheers Andrew
