DIY Powerpack

Hi all,

I have been reading the many archived posts about diy powerpacks.

I am looking to purchase a Waeco 50l (or something similar) but working out how I can power it for our once a year fishing trip up north to steep point. We don't use the 4wd's at all for about 5 days and take different vehicles each year so an external powerpack is a good idea (I don't have a dual battery and don't want one).

We take a large generator which we run for 5 hours in the morning and 5 hours in the evening.

So I was thinking of plugging a charger to the genny, a DIY powerpack (made out of a $60 casing and a marine battery) to the charger and then the fridge.

By running the genny every 5 hours I think the battery will continue to be topped up and we can run the fridge pretty cold 24hrs a day.

So my questions -

Will it work?

Is the battery OK (to keep the costs down I can take it out of the boat for the week). So not asking if it is ideal but will it work without damage?

Is there something easier? ie leaving the fridge in the car and just recharging the main battery..... but then I would need to continue changing leads and plugs.

Also don't want a 3-way fridge as the rest of the year the 12/240 will do fine

Thanks for reading this long first post and hopefully for your advise.

Cheers

Craig

it will work
but it is advisable to get a smart charger...something that will put in say 20amps or more at first

Craig

I couldn't quite see this in your post - But you should run the fridge off the gennie via 240V input whilst charging which will make things last longer.
And it should be set to freeze, with gennie run for couple of hours in a couple of sessions as opposed to 5hrs constant.

By doing this you will minimze the temperature differential which is really how you lose heat (well gain it actually).

You can't really go wrong with what you propose as long as you keep a bit of an eye on fridge temp , because worse case you just run another session with the Gennie.

We have a similar scenario and use 2 ex gopher gell cells wired in parrallel to give 70AH. Cost = < $50 from any gopher place.

is this a 9 stage charger? Does it come in a compact enclosure? will it make my coffee?

The guy's asking for advice. Please don't send him a 'flyer'!

Dry ice lasts up to 'FIVE' days. 9 stage defrost. :-)

Craig,
. Along with the above comments, I guess you already 'wrap' the 'fridge in bedding during the day, with a pillow on top?

If you're running the gen for 10 hours a day (how do you stand the noise?) you hardly need a battery at all.

Thanks for some of your comments and some of you for advise.

Pajman Pete, so would I wire the two batteries up within the casing?

This fridge is going to be used for drinks for about 8 thirsty guys or for freezing fridge so I am guessing that it will need to be run for more than 10 hours a day. Also the genny is hard to avoid unless we buy a solar panel each and it runs when we are hopefully catching fish.
