Hi folks, who can tell me anthing about a Toyota Blizzard?
I have just bought an 82 2.2 N/A diesel 4 speed one of these and know nothing about them. I am led to believe it is mainly Hilux running gear is this correct? What if any, are the pitfalls of this vehicle ????
I cannot respond to any answers for a couple of days but would like some info and reading, when I get home (hopefully 2morrow).
It is a bit of a project car that if it turns out OK will replace my Nissan as an offroad beast of sorts!!! Maybe add LOTS of goodies to it over time???
Cheers and thanks for any info forthcoming. (pictures will come in about a week) Trevor.

It is a rebadged Daihatsu, model before the Rocky (1984-???)
IIRC has a lot of similar parts to Hilux, but may not be identical.
Might be worth asking over at www.outerlimits.com in the Daihatsu section for more info.

It's a rebadged Dihatsu with toyota running gear. Was our first 4b...
Very capable, never gave us any problems till a timing belt service was screwed up by a dealer and (tensioner replaced incorrectly from memory) and the belt slipped, causing a couple of bent valves.
Did some trips in it and it was a good car, but not much room ;-(
Like any deisel, servicing is the key to longevity. Body wise, ours suffered from rust at the bottom of the windscreen; used to get a wet foot everytime it rained. Very light car so very easy on the drive train.
Could have 'em in any colour you liked as long as you liked yellow...
If the rear bumper is cocked up on the left hand side.......?? Could be a familiar vehicle ;-)

Hi John,
This one will need heaps of work, which is why I bought it. I can set it up they way I want for little outlay upfront. Then I can't get in the doghouse for banging up the Nissan (or at least that's what I'm hoping).
I have nicknamed it Beethovin (due to the fact it should be a roll over specialist by the time I'm done with it hehehe) and first up will be the external rollbars then the megalift and big tyres which should give it a bit of body roll hahaha. Then maybe lockers, whinch ect ect.
It runs on Bio now and revs freely without smoke to 3500rpm, which I thought was amazing considering it's age. Pretty spartan as far as accessories go.....has Toyota rubber floor mats if that counts hahahaha.
I should be available next week maybe to work out those maps with you and maybe I will drive the Blizzard down to your place then???? Give me a bell if that suits you.
Regards, Trevor.

Hi ya Trevor, mate I had the Daihatsu version 2.5 NA diesel, and was lead to beleive that it was half Toyota. A great vehicle off road,
mine had a LSD could just about climb trees. Drove it from
Adelaide to
Darwin in 58 hours once boy you know then they are no touring wagon. Speed
well, 110 kph falling off a
cliff, haha.
Cheers Bruce

I will get some photo's of this one to you soon. It is to be a project so no doubt you will see some changes to it over the coming months.

Trevor,
I had a Daihatsu 2.5 diesel which was basically the same as the blizzard. Got little vehicle but like others have said it was no touring wagon. Went everywhere but did have trouble with the transfer case a couple of times. Stripped teeth of some gears but parts were cheap and plentiful back then, about 1984ish.

I had an 84 Rocky that had transfer case/gearbox hassles and I was thinking of this when I bought the little Blizzard, I hope I don't have same drama's.
Thanks, Trevor.

My mum has a Toyota Blizzard.
She has owned it for about 15 years.
The kids & I love it, it has a sideways
seat in the back.
We have a ball running around town, would hate to drive it on the highway.
Daihatsu body but Toyota running gear. It is the mustard colour, I have seen a blue one as
well.
Mums one is a Deluxe, this means it has all the mod cons like a dash pad and you can even adjust the front seats.
Main limitation is it is only a 4 speed gearbox, 90k is about it's comfortable top speed.
It has never rusted or had any major mechanical problems, it has been incredibly reliable. This has a lot to do with the sheltered life it has had.
It is the type of car that puts a smile on your face when driving.
Lots of people mis read the name & call it a Buzzard.

Yep top speed 90kph, revving it's rings off at this speed though :-)))
Might look into a trailer to tow it to the fun spots behind the Nissan.
Have to agree at it putting a smile on your face when you drive it.
Thanks Trevor.

The Toyota Blizzard LD10 is a rebadged Daihatsu Scat with a 2.2L L series motor. The LD20 Blizzard (not sold in Australia) is rebadged Daihatsu Rocky but I am not sure of the motor. The drive train (excluding the motor) is Daihatsu and the 4spd generally does not having any problems. My 5spd F60 needed a rebuild after a retaining nut undid itself inside the gearbox, unsure if it is a common problem.
Overall a very capable and strudy 4WD (in the true sense of the word).
Quick Info
1981?-84 LD10 - Toyota L (2.2L) Diesel (Toyota model and badging)
1978-79 F10 - ? (1.2L) Petrol
1980-84 F20/25 - Toyota 12R (1.6L) Petrol
1980-83 F50/55 - Daihatsu DG (2.5L) Diesel
1983-84 F60/65 - Daihatsu DL (2.8L) Diesel
1984-88? LD20 - Toyota 2L? (2.4L) Diesel (Toyota model and badging)
1984-94? F70/75/77 - Daihatsu DL (2.8L) Diesel (Rocky)
1984-89? F80/85/87 - Toyota 3Y (2.0L) Petrol (Rocky)
I hope this helps. If you need any more info, just ask.

That's the sort of info and reassurance I was chasing. Thanks Sweeney. I wasn't even sure if the 2.2 ws the original motor or an after thought that someone had??? obviously it was the original.
Info on 5sp is of interest as a changeover has already crossed my mind after only driving it 50km down the highway with the 4sp.
I figured it would be a real 4wd in the true sense of the word just by looking at it.
Regards, Trevor.

The difference betweem the 4spd and 5spd is just a additional gear added between the gearbox and transfer case. 5spd Scat/LD10 Blizzard boxes can be found but can be differcult. If you found a Scat 5spd box, you'll need the drive shafts (or get the 4spd ones lenghten/shorten) and the transfer case gear lever which has a z-bend as the 5spd box is longer. The transfer case mount bolted on to the box (not the chassis mount) is different to accommodate the longer box but could be made up if not found.
Rocky boxes are the same, but the gearbox gear lever is located further back than the scat boxes. In order to use the rocky box, new gear lever hole has relocated in the body and modifed 4WD lever (or relocated hole) has to be done.
Both petrol and diesel boxes are the same, just swap over the bell housing.
I hope this helps
