Hi all, I don't want to get rid of my cruiser - lots more tripping to do yet - but my daughter is planning on getting her learner's permit soon, and won't be able to drive my car or her father's (V8 or whatever, not allowed for P platers) when she gets her licence. Does anyone have any good ideas for a third car - not too small, as I want to use it in car parks too - the cruiser doesn't fit at the local shop carparks. She will then be able to drive herself to some of the things I have to at the moment....

A used 4cyl Volvo is one of the best deals you can get in the used car mart.
Forget all the jokes about Volvo drivers.
They have a solid safe rust resistant body with a 2.3 ltre engine that is good for 400000klms if treated right.
Plenty of aftermarket and used parts around

Or a more fashionable choice might be a Toyota Corrola. They also have a good record

Lots of cheap Korean cars around but when they are 10 years old they are not worth fixing if they get a major problem

It all depends on whether you want to spend $2000 or $10000

Thanks Ross fro replying - I'd be prepared to spend around $10-15,000. I want something that's reasonably sturdy but reliable.

Hi Helena

I'm with Ross.
I have a 1999 1.8 Conquest Corolla sedan and can't fault it.
Good cheap little runaround.
Check with Redbook for current valuations, you are in the right $ bracket for that vehicle.

I bought an automatic Corolla for my wife a few years ago as she couldn't drive my manual Discovery. Just under $12,800 and it was just under 3 years old (yes, I had to put the next 12 months rego on it). Only 26,000kms on it at the time.

Can't fault it.

Helena, sadly you'll soon find out that she has her own ides about what car she wants to drive! Of course it will be something fast and guzzling and horribly expensive. You'll want something cheap that's economical, reliable and safe. Welcome to the next phase of parenting :((
My 25yo son recently needed to buy a decent car. Fortunely I had the purse strings and we ended up compromising. Factors included
Warrenty
Safety
*Cool* factor
Gadgets
Price..of course
He was stoked because he got what he wanted and I'm pleased with the safety, warrenty and (almost) economy angle.
He already knew that he couldnt afford to maintain a 4wd.

In fact , he now has a nicer car than I could dream of at his age. Even mum with her 11yo Camry is a tad jealous :))

Yes it was intentional :) Mainly because there's so much rivalry between supporters of different camps. The other factor is I just know someone is going to tell me that for some major mechanical reason that it was an unwise choice :(

Hyundai Accent , new $15,000 , 5 year 150,000km parts and labour , pleasure to drive , bigger than the opposition . Hyundai dealers offer very good deals on Excell and Accents when you need to trade them in .

before you buy anything , make sure she cant drive your car. V8 dosn't mean anything , its power to weight ratio. You can get a list from your local authority , on what car sh can and cant drive.

With all the new rules and regulations ,power to weight ,nighttime passenger numbers /age ect ect ,,10 to 15 thou to spend , buy NEW ,several makes do the under 15 drive away no more to pay , service them as per the book = cheap motoring for the term of the warranty ,,might not be the most "fashionable" but will be the most reliable and she still can beat the "doof doof music" rice burners by the one statement "brand new ,not second hand "

N15 Nissan Pulsars have passed the test with 3 of my daughters. Get the 1.6 litre one after about 1997. And make sure you get one with an airbag.

The Pulsar Q from 1997 onwards all had airbags; And all Pulsars after 1999 had airbags. We like the Pulsar Hatch rather than the sedans because they look better.

Extremely economical (can go Adl - Mel on 44 litres), very reliable and there no Timing belt to change. Will cost from $7500 upwards.

Cheers
Phil

For reliability , Resale , Safty cannot go past toyota corrolla. Thats why all the car hire co. run them. My sons Corrolla has done 320000ks and is still reliable When they can afford to buy their own cars they can buy whatever they like, but if I am paying then it is my choice
Cheers Pete

Helena,
My wife currently has her 2001 Nissan Pulsar Q for sale for around $12000-$13000, negotiable.
She has owned it since new, auto a/c power windows etc and has done 90,000 km.

It is an excellent, reliable car, no problems ever, no oil leaks, registered until march and has been in Canberra since new (hence no rust).
If you are interested let me know and I put you in touch with her.
Will

Thanks Will
I'm not quite ready to buy yet - probably in two - three months time.
