I currently have a GQ 4.2L Petrol/Gas 1993 TI, I tow a 2.2ton Caravan on extended trips around Auz. With fuel prices today one is thinking of changing to a GU TDI 3.0L.
Question 1. Has anyone towed 2ton+ vans long distance with TDI 3.0L?
Question 2. Has anyone owned a GU TDI 3.0 L, tow a Large van and currently done high KLMs without problems?.
Question 3. If you have towed large vans, and had problems, what have they been.

This is only second hand info from a person I met when going for a country drive in our 'new to us' 2000 model 3.0l diesel patrol. We stopped (lookingfor a few pointers) after seeing an identical model parked in a northern NSW
camping area - attached to a 27.5' caravan that included all the mod cons including a huge aircon unit, annexe etc.
The owner had no problems with the car iself having done over 50,000k, most of which towing the van averaging 7L per 100Ks. He was however dissapointed that the engine lacked grunt in steep climbs.
Hope that helped, Karen+Mark

Hi Karen & Mark,
I assume you mean 7km/litre, or just over 14L/100km. 7L/100km is not possible without a van let alone with one that large.
Having said that, 14L/100km is exceptional economy & really shows the advantages of a T/D.

Mate has a 2001 GU auto and tows a 2t + mini digger most work days with 85,000 on the clock he has had no problems. At first he used was paranoid about cooking the transmission esp with city driving, but is now extreemly confident and one hell of a proud GU owner. His old Rangie did an ok job but spent more time at the bowser or in the
shop than at work.

David, i don't think the 3.0L Patrol would have any problems towing the van, but i can't comment on reliability as i don't own one.
What i have done is tow a 21ft
Roma van weighing about 2 tonne with my 3.0L T/D Jackaroo - a very similar engine in terms of power & torque to the 3.0L GU donk.
The Jack tows the van beautifully, easily maintaining highway speeds whilst having enough grunt to climb steep hills with a minimum of fuss.
