Are all these fuel additives ie Injector cleaner, engine boost etc.etc worth while or a waste of time..

They are a great money-spinner for the companies that make them :-)

As for their effectiveness, well I'm a skeptic. Others will disagree, as additives are a fairly subjective topic, ie the car "feels better" when using them.

I'd rather save my money and put it towards quality lubricants. :-)

Hi John R, You should enjoy thinking about the following;

Take one C.310
Many years ago an oil company asked that one engine be run on standard fuel and the other with a measured dose of 'product X' (and no, it wasn't windex!) and don't forget to avoid any cross flow.

The oil company paid for all of the engine mtc on the test engine for about a year. I doubt the additive worked as we never heard anything more about the product - unless they are now adding it at the refinery.

Gidday KK,

The last 310 I flew leaked so much oil, I reckon it got an oil change every 10 hours :-)) "Fill up the oil and check the fuel, Bloggs". :-))

I think our engineers occasionally put a biocide in the fuel tanks of our planes - how often, I dunno.

Back in the 80's if they refuelled some of our piston engined planes on low-lead, we had to put an additive called "Tetra-ethyl Lead" in the tanks to increase the lead content of the fuel. I think that was more targeted at preventing valve seat recession than actually giving any "performance benefits".

Yep, Tetra-ethyl Lead, now theres a blast from the past. Yes you are right, that stuff I mentioned may have even been that but no one told us. It was just a new product that was being tested.

Saw one valve that 'torched' - scared the *** out of me. It looked like some ace person with a gas torch had cut a really nice slice almost right up the stem of an exhaust valve. Nothing had failed..YET. Routine inspection caught it, just luck.

Hi tex1972, It gets a bit complicated, some anti-knock and anti valve resession properties.

Hi Garb,
My experience with fuel additivies is that some work some dont. Drove a concrete aggi for a while and because of constant ildling sooting up was a real problem. Boss tried most diesel cond. on market, only had good results with two In my carby 4runner I just use premium but in wifes efi vehicles I often gave them a dose I view it as preventive maintance.Only time I have ever had to get injectors cleaned was in a XF falcon when we first purchased it. Used a quality fuel conditioner after that and never touched them again in five years
Cheers Pete

There needs to be some independent research done on the additives or their ingredients. We don't really know what goes into the additives. Do they all use the same stuff or is it different.? While you ask this question ask yourself does 98 Octane Premium make a difference..? I have people that say yes and others no.! Choice Magazine proved it didn't if I remember correctly..

Injector cleaner does work in my opinion , I have used Nulon in a Petrol V8 that had been sitting for a while and it was so noticeable that it convinced me, unless off course the natural running of the vehicle did the job..?

It's silly to say additives don't do anything.

I recently tried adding half a tank of fuel to my half full tank, and it doubled my fuel economy. I'm going to do it more often.

So there!

I've learned from hard experience that additives do definately work.

I tried adding half a tank of water to half a tank of fuel: that particular additive sure did something!!

After that the engine wouldn't run, so I got some of the 40% ethanol blend fuel that the rogue servos were selling in Aus ( last year I think it was) and mixed that in and presto the engine ran again cause the water was gone.

Conclusion: additives work!!!!

:)

I think you best check your figures, adding half a tank of fuel to your already half tank of fuel would not have doubled your fuel economy.. Maybe your range but not your economy...
