Just wondering-
What are your past/experiences on turbos for HZ75 models.

Is it worth the money to get one fitted?
Would it be a good idea to have the exhaust upgraded at the same time?
or should i leave it alone?

I will be pulling either a 7x4 builders trailer or a 16ft fibreglass boat.
I know it is capable of towing this already but are there any consequences from fitting one to this 1994 motor?
It has 156 000 kms on the clock and i plan on having it until it dies.

Thanks in advance for your opinions.....

If it has a 1HZ motor then go for it. I did at 140000 kms and wish I had done it at 45000 kms. Dont worry about the exhaust sysrem, you will get plenty from the turbo. You will get power from 96 to 136 kw and torque from 300 to nearly 400 nm. It just keeps pulling at 2000 rpm. Forget an intercooler as there is enough heat under the bonnet already. Fuel consumption will increase a lot cos you will just want to keep on driving the thing instead of going home to bed. Seriously, the fuel consumption will not change.Good luck.

Brian,
I fitted a DTS (now MTQ) when my 1HZ had 126000 km on it. I went with a 2 1/2" mandrel bent exhaust about 18 mths later(when the old system failed) and wish I'd done it sooner. Get the injectors done first and enjoy it.

Brian, I put a safari turbo on my troopy at 240,000 kms with no exhaust modifications or intercooler. Best thing I've done. Pulls better, climbs hills easier and has more lowdown grunt in sand and mud. If you intend to keep the hz then I would not hesitate.

Motor issues aside, the risk you take is that it may overheat, so after 156,000k and 12 years I'd have the radiator out, top tank removed and rodded.

Second issue is the gearbox . I wouldn't be towing the boat and the trailer in 5th.

With the factory turbo 78/79series, Toyota addressed the cooling issues with better underbonnet airfow and I believe a bigger fan. They also fitted a heavier gearbox.

Cheers

I thought the golden rule with towing in 5th was to use common sense anyway.
I was wondering about the differences between the factory turbo 79model against the aftermarket turbo 75 series, cheers.

Gday Brian,
Agree with you on the golden rule!

Differences between HDJ79 and a HZJ75 with aftermarket turbo??

#1 $10-20,000!! (second hand)
#2 Factory TD is 24valve, direct injection, EFi. So it breathes well - revs out very easily, has maximum torque at 1400rpm (vs 2200rpm for 1Hz), can add Dtronic if you wish, doesn't overheat.
#3 Better fuel consumption with factory TD - about 2-3 l/100k from my observations.
#4 Factory TD can remain reliable with the extra power - hasn't had the piston/head issues that some people have had with 1Hz turbo.
#5 Stronger H150F gearbox and clutch fitted to factoryTD. H55F and R151F gearboxes in the 1Hz models have not been as reliable.
#6 78/79series upgrades included 5inch longer cab, 8 inch longer wheelbase, front coil springs, longer rear leaf springs.
#7 Diffs may be stronger in your older 75series.

Cheers
Phil
