G'day All
Does anyone know the biggest size tyre that will fit under a toyota prado 2004 diesel? It's all standard running gear. I want to put 33" or 35" tyres under it using the original rims! Anyone got any thoughts? Will I still have my full steering lock to lock? I've got an ARB winch bullbar which has opened the front end up a bit.
I'm thinking about coopers, What do you think about coopers STT and Sure trac? What do you know about kelly tyres?
cheers,
Maggot

I had 100% failure from Cooper STs light truck construction.
All 4 blew out, they are OK on bitumen & maybe sand, but don't take them anywhere near gibber tracks.
The first 2 let go on the car, then I relegated them to the camper trailer & they proved there consistency, they let go on it too!

I have Cooper ATR on
mine in LT265/70R17 which I think translates to a bit under 31" and I get a bit of scraping on full lock just on the plastic wheel arch liners at the front. Not looked at it really to see how close they are to any of the bodywork or bullbar (standard Toyota Alloy job). I have stock
suspension on still.
One big issue to consider when upsizing tyres on the Prado is carrying a spare on the back door. The spare sits in a hollowed section on the door and may need to be spaced out on the stud to be able to be carried.
I have been real happy with the Cooper ATR even in gibber territory and they have over 30,000km on them with only about 30% wear.
Next set will be something more agressive for a tryout and I will be going for Goodyear MTR's in the same size.
Cheers

So you think 33" would be pushing the frendship on the prado?
What have you herd about the MTR's? I alway seem to hear mixed reports about the coopers?
Cheers

Forget about Coopers... Put GoodYear MTR on it.
Yes, you can put 33" with some mods on, but it will make your car "illegal" in Oz.
You will have to raise the body to fit 35" on Prado...

33" will fit if you remove the front mudflaps. I had 285/75/16 MTR's and Interco Trxus on my GX 120.
35" won't fit unless you cut into one body mount and possible a little floor pan or move the front end forward. i.e. BIG JOB

How many inch body lift would you need? How big a job is that? Any idea of cost?

For 33" you don't need body lift, just 2"
suspension lift...

2" suspention lift . What sort of $ would that be?
What are the biggest tyres that would fit without a lift?

For something like bilsteins shocks (which are the best for prado) you'll be looking
at around $1500-1900 fitted...
Have a look at 120scool
forum (www.lcool.org)
265/70/R17 is prabably biggest without the lift...

Hey maggot
I run 265/75 x 16 MTR's on
mine.
Just a little scrapping on full lock on the mudflaps. I wouldn't go any bigger on a diesel as the bigger you go the worse it is on power and the further the right foot has to go down there for fuel economy drops. These are bad enough on fuel economy as it is.
And there is a rear diff issue brewing so the bigger the tyres the higher the potential.

What diameter is the tyre combo you are running? What fuel consumption are you getting? ? liters to 100k's. How do you find the MTR's? What issues are you having with your diff?

The tyre rim combo is 790mm or 32 inches.
Around town I am pushing to get better than 15 litres per 100 with stock tyres, no roof rack and empty. On the open road I can't get better than 14.5 litres per 100 unless I sit on 90 km/h. I am very dissappointed with the economy. Every where you look and read it states you can get up to 1400 km from the tanks, I can just get 1050km from the tanks. Now alot will say its the way you drive. I have varied my driving style to experiment with figures and it doesn't matter. I have given up and just accept it the way it is.
The MTR's only go on for off road work but saying that I did a 10 000 km trip in it last year which incorporated rain over the Blue Mountains, Flinders, Ayres
Rock and
Simpson Desert. I loved them and they performed excellent. I won't have any other tyre.
The diff issues you can read about on the 120scool yahoo groups site. You will have to join as a member.
Cheers
