could a member enlighten me about this track. Looking at including this section on a trip down the Strzelecki next Easter. All help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Dave

This track is actually a pretty good drit road for the most part.

It is the primary access from the east to the mid and north sections of the Flinders Ranges including Arcaroola.

It seems to be well maintained and often carries big trucks ("B" Doubles and Road trains) which carry fuel and other goods into the area.

You get a good look at the eastern side of the Flinders which just seem to stand up out of the plain country to the east.

Yunta to Balcanoona would take about 3.5 hours but it is worth travelling slower than that and taking in the scenery.

There is good access to a number of nice places from this track. At Balcnoon you have access to Lake Frome and just south of there is access to my fav camping spot in the Flinders, Chambers Gorge, nice spot for a couple of days with good camping and some interesting walks

The warning on this bit of road is that if it rains it gets closed pretty quickly and even a very small amount of rain makes it very slippery.

Good roadhouse food at Yunta.

Agree with Duncs, really, have been on that road a couple of times, part at night with a lot of roos before we pulled up to camp. The first time was with soft roader tyres and we punctured and had to travel remainder of the trip, about 300 kms on a space saver spare - now that was un-nerving. Had it repaired at Peterborough before heading East to Broken Hil. Didn't know any residents at Peterborough at that stage.

The road is usually good but some sharp stones around at times, and graded washouts at the Northern end. After the Arkaroola turnoff, the track deteriorates and the washouts more pronounced or it certaily was last year. The Strz is a breeze, though not so if wet. Good tread on tyres before you go would be the advice.

A few years age we drove Blinman to Arkaroola which meant we joined the road in question part way, but it was in great condition. it is a well made gravel road not as I remember it 40 yrs ago when all those northern roads were literally just graded out of the bush.
It must be regularly maintained because of the tourists and supply vehicles.

It is a nice road - as said quite well maintained as a service road for Eastern State tour buses to Flinders & Gammon Ranges. Worth while time to be had wandering and pondering the Waukaringa Gold Mine ruins.
