Hi Gmd
My summary on those is that they are a very marginal tool, unlike other post about tyrepliers in which cost/benefit is such they I think are worth carrying in all trips.
I fact while they can work, I the attemps I have seen they have not done the job
partly due to inexperience but I wasn't real happy about that heavy steel section
under tension.
Burying tyre in sand doesn't work to
well either - but It can , as a last ditch effort.

I had a look at the steel anchor at the link , as you said in your reply "heavy steel section " it would be heavy or it will bend, and it would take up room, and burying a tyre does work m been proven over the years and as i said in my reply ,better to carry an exhaust jack because i'm getting too old for blooody shoves, but yes it works Site Link

Check out my winch anchor in my photo's, though it would have been easier if i had an exhaust air jack and then just poke a bit of sand back under the
wheels.

Holy Dooly did you think to check the specs and price on that ,,what a rip off and the bigger one is 45lb = 20.41165665 kg I use the bigger because if it is going to work then the bigger will , the smaller would bend or pull out
RW14,000 *** 14" 45 LBS. 45" $500.00 + $40 shipping

A mate of
mine uses 5 stardroppers as a winch anchor, they are hammered into the sand about a couple of feet apare, they are attached to each other by rope in a configuration which puts pressure on the next one if the first one pulls, hence increasing it's strength, although I'm thinking 4 or 5 stardroppers would probably weigh as much as the steel anchor, but much cheaper and could lay on the roof racks.
As for me,
well I've got a hand winch and have tried to bury the tyre on one occasion with no success (sand was too soft way to deep), but I still managed to dig my way out.
Got stuck another time, hoplessly I would say, another fisherman helped us out by providing some rubber strips about 6 foot long, similar to tyre tread, we dug ouselves out a bit, put the rubber under the front tyres and drove out in a jiffy. Will be even easier when I get my front LOKKA fitted. Rays sell a similar thing which rolls up to a reasonable size for about $70 (even cheaper on a 20% off day) so they will be the next acquisition for me, just helps with traction a bit.
Carrying another 20kgs and losing more space with a $500 product, no thanks, but each to their own.

I bought one of these and as i have said before its like a
first aid kit for your car . You hope you never have to use it but if you need it its there . (I dont have to dig any frikkin holes or carry star posts or bury the spare tyre)

thats interesting .. thanks for the link ...
looks neat and smaller but with 11klb it's speced below my winch force.
Now a question. The pull bar with the ring attachement is roughly parallel
to the wings. I would expect a different angle that the wings dig in when the
force is applied to the bar. with a higher vehicle I would expect to pull this out of the sand ? Is the operating position shown ? or is that just a marketing picture ...
I am mainly after a quick solution on soft beaches when I might get stuck pulling the cruiser from the
water with no trees around .. it's not so much that I want to pull out of a hole but would want assistance by the winch when the boat and truck is too heavy for the surface and might get bogged, so it is for situations where time matters.
Where did you buy it ?
Space and price does not worry me as some above have noted.
thanks

the bar has three different positions to adjust the angle . If you double line pull with a snatch block attached to the PRT,try to dig out first and you break it then im sorry but this is one serious predicament that you must have been in .

yes I have seen those and will probably get some eventually but my main use
is not so much when the vehicle is bogged rather than taking a precaution when
I pull the boat out of the
water if
the beach is soft .. and mostly there are no
good winch points on
the beach so such a device comes in handy when it works ...
thanks for posting

G'day GMD,
Still getting around to getting
mine but I saw the guys at a show last year and they were playing a DVD showing the maxtrax applications - looked versatile. But I can see your point about using a winch instead for your application - simply can't muck around in those situations.
Kind regards

In the US they have a waffle board for such purposes but the Matrax looks better for a few reasons. In my situation where I would mainly use the anker the truck is mostly already in the
water and if I really get stuck for some reason there is not much time or opportunity with a board or digging .. I would not push back into the
water unless I have a safety line in the front.
I was looking at some sand ladders (allu or steel) .. there are some step like things you can roll up but they are no good for real heavy weights and only good on dry land. The Matrax is a bit short and a bit expensive to have 4 or so. I also would like them a bit wider ...
I will give that anker a try .. looks better than that PullPal thingy but also will keep that Matrax on my list ..
thanks for answering
