Carl,
I used to sell these
winches on eBay (but don't anymore), and I would say there is nothing wrong with them. For all the ones we sold over 12 months or so, we had 2 warranty problems.
One was a broken brake, which is what happens when a fully laden 80 series plus trailer rolls backwards down a
hill and uses the winch to stop.... and the other was a manufacturing problem in the gearbox (a one off issue).
Just make sure you get one of the later models (released a few months ago in Shanghai), they look really good. I think the ones sold by Aldi and Repco are the older units, but the guys on eBay have a pretty high turnover, so should have the newer ones.
As a side note, we were reminded why we stopped selling them on eBay a few weeks ago. We put our last 12000lb unit up for sale, and the guy that bought it sent an email telling us he no longer wanted it. This is quite apart from the fact he bought one from another guy on eBay for slightly less....grrrr..
Cheers,
Chris
